Real Player on 64 bit Firefox

I have been using the BBC iPlayer to listen to BBC radio programs. I have just got used to this and started to rely on it when, a week or so ago, the BBC made some changes which stopped it working.

I now get the message:
To play … please first install Real Player.

I have been to the Real Player website and downloaded and installed the software but the BBC website still does not work. There was only one Linux version on the site so I assume that its 32 bit. I am using 64 bit Firefox on openSUSE 11.1 64-bit so I assume there is some incompatibility here?

I have tried e-mailing the BBC but it has been several days and, so far, no reply.

Searching on the web I have found that nspluginwrapper wrapper allows 32bit plugins to run on 64 bit Firefox but I can’t find how to set it all up so this software all works together under openSUSE.

Can you help?

Martin

PS. although I object to my (and other UK license payers) money being used to force me to used certain types of software I would still like to get it working.

BBC has hardly any realplayer stuff now.

If you have the flash player installed in _64bit you need nspluginwrapper also.

A su terminal and do this

zypper in nspluginwrapper

to check you have flash player do this in a terminal

rpm -qi flash-player

if not there

zypper in flash-player

You might want to consider this from Packman

get_iplayer

Make sure you have the Packman repo in your list.

zypper in get_iplayer

This is a terminal application, but excellent.
More info at: Linuxcentre

Thanks for the quick reply, I’ve tried all you suggest - see command line below, I still get the error message (even after shutting down and restarting the computer). So I guess it needs to be configured so that it knows about Real Player but I don’t know how to do that.

This error message about installing Real Player happens on all the BBCs radio programs that I have tried. This is a new issue that started happening about a week ago, so why do you say “BBC has hardly any realplayer stuff now”?

Start real player from a terminal. I’m not sure of the command, I guess it will be:

realplayer

or

realplay

or

real

don’t allow updates but let it configure mozilla helpers

Maybe this is just an issue with _64
If anyone is following this and is _64 in the UK
Please try a radio session at bbc iplayer
Thanks!

=======================================

Open a terminal and type:

get_iplayer --type=radio

from the list of radio, look for one you want and copy the number on the left eg: 13202

then type

get_iplayer --get 13202

the file will be save to your /home/username

N.B. In the terminal you may need to go to ‘settings’ - edit current profile and adjust the ‘scrolling’ to 1999

Another alternative could be to try the mplayer plugin from Packman and in the Firefox preferences - under applications you can choose mplayer to play real media

Well I thought I had the BBC site working OK here with firefox on 64bit last
week, just trundled over there and it asked me to install realplayer or
just plain bombed the browser.

I first tried the get_iplayer but ( might just be me ) it d/loaded a shed
load of lists and I could not make head nor tail of which number to use for
live streaming, but it was just a very quick look.

so I followed the link to the realplayer site, d/loaded the player ver. 11
to a dir then used krusader to open it in the “install software” app and
now firefox works fine, am listening to something on Radio 2.

But less of that back to Planet Rock on my DAB pushed through all 7 speakers

Why waste bandwidth.

I have managed to get it to work but only if I su root and then start firefox from the command line. If I run firefox as a normal user I still get the error message about installing real player.

If I try to run realplay as a normal user I get:

martin@suse111:~> realplay
The program ‘realplay.bin’ received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was ‘BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)’.
(Details: serial 391 error_code 3 request_code 15 minor_code 0)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
martin@suse111:~>

If I run it under root I get the listing below.

Martin

suse111:/home/martin # realplay
Inside realplayer I then clicked on menu -> help -> player reset . I skiped the connection speed test and ran configure Mozilla helpers

Ummm cannot help you there.

I just followed the link and installed reaplayer 11 from the site.

I opened a console, typed realplay ( as user not root ) the window opened
and I went through the config and bandwidth test.

All works fine in firefox for listening to online radio from BBC with no
prompt to install.

however I do notice a segfault on closing the app:

kernel: realplay.bin[2656]: segfault at 0 ip 00000000456b378a sp
00000000bf86c1f0 error 4 in libgobject-2.0.so.0.2101.0[456ab000+43000]

But this does not appear to cause any probs during playing, only on close.

Check all your multi-media, mplayer etc is from packman

I’ve just visited BBC - Radio Homepage with ff browser and found that even though I set the BBC player preferences to real player, I had ‘mediaplayerconnectivity’ ff add-on installed. This stopped real player from launching. Your problem may be different to mine, but I outline my experience anyway.

I needed to adjust ff preferences via Edit → Preferences → Manage Add-ons. From here, I could adjust the mediaplayerconnectivity helper, by disabling the real media type. Now, the real media stream was ignored by the latter and real player opened instead.

Similar thread here.

I just got a reply from BBC iPlayer Support (see below) that seems to be saying that Real Player is not required. However something seems to have changed at the beginning of June (both for me and other posters) that caused this error message. If its not a change the BBC has made then could it be a SUSE update? Perhaps a change to Firefox or mediaplayerconnectivity that the last poster mentioned. I have not made any changes to my system outside the updater applet.

Dear Martin

Thanks for contacting BBC iPlayer Support.

I understand that you would like to be able to access BBC iPlayer in something other than Real Player.

Listen again content is offered in the higher quality Adobe Flash format in addition to Real Player.

I would advise you to make sure that you have the latest version of Adobe Flash installed. You can get the latest version from the link below:

Adobe - Adobe Flash Player

However if you have the latest version installed and are still having problems your initial install may have been corrupted so I would advise you to uninstall and reinstall the software. You will need to visit the link below to uninstall the software:

How to uninstall the Adobe Flash Player plug-in and ActiveX control

Unfortunately I am only able to assist with matters directly relating to BBC iPlayer, therefore I am unable to help with installing Real Player on Linux.

Once again thank you for contacting BBC iPlayer. *If you have any further enquires please do not hesitate to contact our team.

Regards

Andrew

well I don`t know what was the cause, but installing realplayer here did fix
the prob.

That is not syaing that an update to FF or something else cured it at the
same time but IIRC when I saw your post I tried the BBC2 Radio on the site
and it asked for realplayer as you posted. I installed and all works fine
and I did nothing in between???

could Real have pulled something in or changed something in the plugin dir?

I had been messing about removing the nplayerplugin or whatever it is called
a few days before so that I could install the 64bit flasplayer…

that is about all I can think of that I have done so maybe a combination of
me removing the links in the browser-plugin dir and installing real caused
something to work.

Have just run FF and started the BBC2 Radio prog ( Steve Wright ) and
monitored the User procs with ksysguard and yes realplay.bin is called along
with the npviewer.bin.

So realplayer is involved here.
