Reading floppy contents

Who still uses floppies? Since yesterday I do! I installed Virtual Box under Open Suse 11.1 to run OS/2 version 4. The installation of OS/2 is started from some floppies. However I couldn’t read more then 1 floppy. Whatever I did, the contents of the first floppy was shown, even with an empty floppy drive. Then I stopped Virtual Box, but nothing changed: whenever I changed the floppy, only the first was shown.
Starting the computer after installation of Virtual Box a notice appeared “Kernel changed”. So who can tell me what is going on, is it a bug in Virtual Box or in Open Suse 11.1?

The symptoms you describe are consistent with not unmounting the floppy after use. You used to have to do this manually under KDE3 but KDE4 appears to handle it automatically, at least when I unplug my USB floppy drive (Not tried changing disks while it is plugged in).

Try unmounting and then mounting after you have inserted a new disc.

Indeed! Mounting and unmounting manually is the solution. though “Floppy” in “My computer” indicates “auto” as file system. Up to solving the next problem…

Floppy drivers were not designed (as far as I can remember) to detect media change.
In virtual box, you better create the floppy images first and then, switch images while installing (from its Devices->Mount Floppy menu).
