I’ve gotten close by setting the desktop to folder view then being ruthless
in disabling all the desktops effects, etc. I even went so far as to remove
compiz & such. Bit-by-bit, the eye candy is disappearing and usability is
returning. Haven’t started on the plasmoids yet but as I simplify the
desktop they are rapidly becoming a target.
BTW, my motivation is 200 or so users on whom I don’t want to expend the
time or effort necessary to return them to the level of productivity I see
with KDE3.
