You can use Yast for that: System -> Configuration -> Administrator Settings. Choose Hardware, then click on Printers.
Is this a network printer, or is it connected directly to your PC? If the latter, Yast should detect it. It will suggest a driver, which you can try (it’ll probably work) and you’ll be in business.
If it’s a networked printer (even if it’s shared from another computer on the network), you may have to do some other work. Post back here with the details if you can’t get it running.
Thanks for your suggestion.
It’s not working, when i choose to print a page i do get the print dialog box & it says sending to printer but the printer does’nt print the page. I have download the drivers from the samsung site for SCX-4100. But still its not working.

Some more questions…
How is the printer connected (eg usb) to your machine?
After you downloaded the drivers, can you explain what steps (commands) you executed to install them?
Have you tried to print a test page ok with cups web interface (via your browser)
http://localhost:631/printers/
cat /etc/cups/printers.conf
This may also be a permissions problem (other issues notwithstanding).
How to do these, i am a newbie so i dont’ know much about it
If possible, kindly let me know step-by-step how to install the drivers ?
Start from the top. You mentioned you downloaded a driver. I’m guessing it was a *.tar.gz (tarball) file.
You need to type some commands within a CLI shell (console). You will also need to be root first. Do this with
su (press enter, then enter root password when prompted)
yast > hardware > printer (follow any prompts given)
See how that goes…

You might want to look at these two pages:
http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Samsung-SCX-4100
http://forums.freestandards.org/read.php?31,451
They are not real encouraging. If you installed the 64bit, x86_64 you will
need to modify some of the information from the openprinting forum. If you
are using 64bit please let us know.

Thanks for the suggestion,
once i finished the above steps i’ll let you know.
Thanks,
Sanghvi
Thanks !!!
it worked, but scanner is not working, the drivers were unified for printer & scanner.

Thats good news re printer.
For the scanner:
What does the output of ‘scanimage -L’ report? You mention it doesn’t work but you don’t describe what steps you tried.
You can try the
sane-find-scanner
command with your usb scanner plugged in.
Some scanner HOWTOS for you to review:
I tried through YAST it said no scanner is found. As per your suggestion i gave the command ‘sane-find-scanner’ & here is the output…
*sane-find-scanner
I have this 3-in-One Samsung SCX-4100 printer, Scanner & copier, is OS is ignoring scanner since on same USB port printer is register, i dont’ know much about linux just my wild guess…
Let me know what to do

Sanghvi;
The Openprinting site has two listings for the SCX-4100. You might want to
look at:

to follow up on PV’s point; (that there may be a permissions issue);
in a terminal, assume substitute user powers; (also known as root):
scanimage -L
tell us what that says:
(the # signifies that you are logged in as su …so you don’t type that in …)
linux-nc1u:/home/sanghvi # scanimage -L
No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).
linux-nc1u:/home/sanghvi #
tell us the output of
lsusb
also: in post #7, pv asked you
If you are using 64bit please let us know.
Thanks !!
Here is the output
sanghvi@linux-nc1u:~> lsusb
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 04e8:3413 Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd SCX-4100 Scanner
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
sanghvi@linux-nc1u:~>
How to Check whether the OS is 64 Bit or 32 ?
so lsusb sees your Samsung
open a terminal; log in as root; enter root password; then
chmod a+rw /dev/bus/usb/002/003
that should make any user be able to access the scanner
try xsane
it works for our Canon scanner; see if it finds your scanner now
… oh … the 64bit question … I was hoping you might have remembered what you clicked when you installed
I think the command
uname -a
may help us, but grateful if other forum members can chip in if this is wrong
Thanks !!!
I have given the commands as …
sanghvi@linux-nc1u:~> su
Password:
linux-nc1u:/home/sanghvi # chmod a+rw /dev/bus/usb/002/003
linux-nc1u:/home/sanghvi # uname -a
Linux linux-nc1u 2.6.27.19-3.2-pae #1 SMP 2009-02-25 15:40:44 +0100 i686 athloni386 GNU/Linux
linux-nc1u:/home/sanghvi #
When i tried to start scanlite it said NO Scanner Device Found
The SANE project
SANE - Scanner Access Now Easy
(Scanner Access Now Easy)
is the source for information for scanners, for linux;
Your model number is not listed, but a near-relative is, and it is described as unsupported:
so that is a pretty definite ruling;
do not despair: many countries have on-line sales of computer equipment; we looked for a fully supported second-hand scanner, and bought the CanoScan N650U
as on here
it was listed as offering complete support; the scanner was very cheap; ( a few dollars in any currency);
it works well; we have permissions issue; (a Suse issue I believe) that we solve by determining the lsusb that you did, and then issuing the command I gave you;
at least you got the printer working well; we have used an ML-2010 and it has worked well
