if your hardware is good, it should run like the wind

so, what do you mean by slow? hard disk in and out? CPU pegged
constantly? network just not moving? apache serving like cold syrup?

what kind of “lab data server” is it: crunching numbers; serving up
database querries; doing 3D rendering, serving files for other lab
users…what software are your running on top of openSUSE?

did you install a GUI desktop? which one? and why?

did you install it while connected to the net, and/or have you since
let it update all packages?

it sounds like maybe you have a corrupted install, maybe a faulty
install disk…did you have any errors during install?

are there any hints of problems in your logs?

what is your IT department’s Linux background/experience?

  1. did you get your install image from
http://software.opensuse.org/112/en ? (if not, then where?)
  2. did you check the md5sum of the downloaded iso?
  3. burn the disk as slow as you can?
  4. use good media?
  5. do this http://tinyurl.com/yajm2aq before install attempt?

if you answered “no” (or “don’t know”) to any of those then see the
following cites, and if we can help further, please ask because we
want you to be successful:

those last two are labeled as for “new users”…don’t be put off by
that, because many well seasoned geeks find nuggets of useful stuff in
there…

Hello palladium,

For some reason the original thread you answered to is gone in the wide blue yonder. Thus your wise words became post #1 in a new thread.

May be this is because of the wonders of NNTP of which I have no furher knowledge, but I though it would be better to warn you about this.

Regards,

well…there was (and still is, in the nntp side) a posting by
sapanmandloi <http://forums.opensuse.org/member.php?userid=44248> saying:

Hello we have recently installed openSUSE 11.2 64bit version on a HP
PROLINT ml150G6 (Zion Quad-CORE, 8GB RAM) server.
But however we are finding the machine working very slow on this
openSUSE version.

Can anyone suggest whether this is because of openSUSE version as we
checked hadware is working fine.

Please suggest what would be the best version of openSUSE on this
machine which will work as a lab data server.

Thanks

and, after i answered in hardware, i noticed the same post was entered
into another forum about two minutes later (but, i don’t remember
which forum)…

now both of sapanmandloi’s posts are gone, and i can only GUESS that
someone (or something) thought they were spam, maybe…

ah, maybe a mod could find the real email for that member and ask them
to repost, once…(or maybe this and the other was just a spam bot
testing…hmmmm, but the user isn’t banned…) …confused, as usual.

palladium

Confused, as you say.

Until now non of the mods confessed to have done anything about this thread/posts.

I personaly see nothing being wrong with the OPs first post, but for the usual lack of information and the vague description.

EDIT: this is malcomlewis explanation:

Hi
It’s one of those occasional ones where a user posts, the ‘nntp gateway’
sync runs and then because the user is still in the 10 minute window for
editing they delete their post.

wow! maybe i asked one too many questions!!

palladium

You do, most of them are needed, but not all people like it. But OTOH if we were clairvoyant, as they seem to think, they would not like that either.
