I’m having a small problem and wonder if anyone can help me.
Last night when I wanted to put my music from my removable hard drive to the main one, it rebooted for no reason. I thought it was just the drive until today when it did the same while downloading and installing videolan player. Is there something I’m doing wrong or do I need to undo something? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
First make sure to check your drive cables as a loose one can cause strange behavior. Check both the IDE/SATA cables and the power supply one. Also make sure that your memory modules are seeted well. You can also run Mem Test to check for faulty memory, if that may be the case.
Those aren’t it because it can run for days on end without a shutdown or anything. It only really did it, so far, when trying to install videolan and putting my music folder on here.

I’m not having any blackouts or brownouts at all.
It seems to be doing a proper shutdown. It turns on just fine though. It shut down again when I tried to install a video player I need for my French class.
it may be the pc’s internal power supply. i had this go on an old dell machine, the pc would sometimes work fine, sometimes go under booting, sometimes when booted and running fine. but when you say shutdown, please describe more… does it go under normal shutdown (i.e. you see the opensuse shut down log) or does the machine just die straight away?

don’t forget the perrenial p.c. problem **dust ! ** check inside to make sure none is accumulating on the cpu fan & any other fan, as, this can cause over-heating & lead to shut-downs

It goes into normal shutdown. There’s not a dust problem, as I dust it regularly and as I’ve said before, it can run for days as long as I don’t try to use Yast or for some odd reason, move some of my music to the hard drive.
I might just try reinstalling when I get out of class. Hopefully that will solve the problem.
I’m going to open up my laptop as soon as I get home and see if there are any unconnected parts, just to make sure before I try to reinstall opensuse or put mandriva back on it.
Well last night I opened it up and everything was fine. Today I reinstalled it whenever I open my “music” folder it says something about “halting now”. I couldn’t catch all of it but it doesn’t seem like much. Currently I’m at a friend’s house and going to see if her installation responds the same way as mine.
Nope. Her Opensuse opens it just perfectly and I can see everything in it. Her and I have the exact same version so it’s catching me for a loss at words.
