Random issue: Black screen after GRUB.

Hi there,

2 weeks ago, I have a new laptop (DELL XPS L502X). I’ve installed OpenSuse 11.4 64 bits.
Almost everything works great, except for one issue:

Sometimes (Not always) when I start (or restart) my laptop after the GRUB, my screen turns to black, and all I can do is to manually shut it down.

I guess the problem is about the graphic card. I read that Nvidia cards with Optimous technology has no support for linux. One solution I found was to install hybrid drivers, so I installed “Bumbleblee” according to these instructions. Basically added this repository and installed the software with Yast. Run this commands:

To configure Bumbleblee…

bumbleblee-configuration

Then, try disabling the card, reboot, but it didn’t work.

bumbleblee-disablecard

So, I tried enabling the card, reboot, it didn’t work as well.

bumbleblee-enablecard

Thanks in advance for your help!

Does booting with ‘nomodeset’ on the Options line work?

Hi,

No, this option doesn’t exist in the boot line.

This is the line from /boot/grub/menu.lst:

title Desktop -- openSUSE 11.4 - 2.6.37.6-0.7
    root (hd0,1)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.37.6-0.7-desktop root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST9500420AS_5VJDC5C2-part2 resume=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST9500420AS_5VJDC5C2-part1 splash=silent quiet showopts vga=0x317
    initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.37.6-0.7-desktop

Should this option be here?

Thanks for your answer.

Greetings.

He wanted you to type it on the options line before it booted.

Ok, so I typed it on the options and It does boot, but the screen resolution reduces to 1024x768 when it should be 1366x768.
Also, the desktop effect appears disabled.

Hope this help.

Thanks.

reading from the top of this page will give you the background on what
is going on:

http://tinyurl.com/23mgej6

when you get to “1st thing to try (nomodeset)” you will know you have
found that your problem is with your graphic setup and the driver, so
hop over to
http://forums.opensuse.org/information-new-users/advanced-how-faq-read-only/438705-opensuse-graphic-card-practical-theory-guide-users.html
(which was mentioned in what you read, already) to proceed with the
cure…now, whether or not you get to 1366x768 remains in the hands of
the driver…maybe you get there, maybe not…

post again if you get stuck…

but if you get stuck on “I read that Nvidia cards with Optimous
technology has no support for linux.” again i’m afraid there is not much
to do but wait for nvidia to produce a linux driver for you…[or release
their close held secrets so an open source driver can be written…]
