RAID, OS 13.2, new install

I tried to install OS 13.2.

/boot (RAID 1)
/ (RAID 5)
/home (RAID 5)
/data (RAID 5)
Filesystem EXT4

Never had any problem installing OS 12.x and OS 13.1 on several systems using above configuration and Grub 0,97.

Is it possible to install OS 13.2 on this configuration? if YES, how to?

Exactly what type of RAID are you speaking of.

Genuine Software RAID installed with YAST.

Should not be a problem. What have you tried. I doubt it will automatically work You will need to take control and tell it what you want. Are you trying to upgrade exiting or doing a full new install?? Using a live install or full DVD??

The system was running OS 13.1 booting from /dev/md0 RAID1 (/dev/sda1 & /dev/sda2) with swap on /dev/md1 RAID5, root on /dev/md2 RAID5 and /home on /dev/md3 RAID5. Bootloader was Grub 0.97.
The motherboard is 5 years old and has no EFI, etc.

Tried to upgrade to OS 13.2. This failed. Then wiped the drives using “dd” and tried to do fresh install using the install DVD. The the installation completed with Grub2 as bootloader. It just will not boot.

I understand that Grub2 is supposed to automatically install and boots from a RAID arrays. Grub 0.97 needs to be manually setup on both MBRs of the RAID1 array.

As previously said, I have in past fresh installed and used OS12.0, 12.1, 12.2, 12.3 and 13.1 on this PC with no change in hardware. Upgrades never worked properly.

Where did you install grub to??

Grub was installed to MBR of I belive of /dev/sda.

Problem solved:

/dev/sda SATA cable was flaky.
Replaceing the cable and another cleanup of the 3 drives with “dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sd? bs=512” did the job. Sytem now boots and handles disk failures as designed.

Ha would not have guessed that one. Good you found it.
