Specifically referring to the section about enabling DRI. I have this hardware in my laptop and apparently the radeon driver supports DRI on it, but mesa does not, and it needs to be updated to a backported version.
I’m not using the same card as you, I’m using the Radeon Xpress 1100, but it looks like installing the fglrx driver and running aticonfig --initial does this for you. Looking at my xorg.conf I see the following:
Well, I might end up having to give that a shot. But if you read closely the HOWTO I linked, that actually uses the open-source “radeon” driver, instead of the proprietary “fglrx”, which I’d very very much like to do.
I don’t know about the Radeon driver, but it seems as though it could work, the best way to tell is to try it out. Just backup your working xorg.conf file before you do so. Due to the fact that they don’t give you a version that you need to update mesa to the first set should be to figure out if one of these, Software.openSUSE.org, has the support you need. If all else fails then you can use the flgrx driver and get DRI support.
BTW: thank your for the link to that wiki page, I didn’t know my graphics card was supported by the Radeon driver. I might just use that instead of flgrx when I upgrade my system.
That’s because these seem to be rather recent (last few weeks) developments. It’d be great if there was some way to tell what the date on these packages are (I’m at work an not on my SUSE machine right now, so I can’t try it out at the moment.)
If these packages don’t happen to have the fixes I need, is there a developer or package maintainer I should get in touch with? It’d be great to implement this fix before the final 11.0 release, because that would mean my laptop and others like it would run SUSE perfectly out of the box. Which is awesome.

It will fall under one of these three categories. This will ether fall under minor or wishlist priority. Don’t be worry about marking it under the wrong category they can, and probably will, change your bug report so that it will be correct.
*Note: sorry about my bad circles, I am not an artist and using the touch pad on my laptop doesn’t help much.
I actually sent an email to the mesa maintainer, and he said that the changes in question are included in Mesa 7.1. Unfortunately, Mesa 7.1 won’t be introduced as default until openSUSE 11.1, as it’s still in release candidate phase.
I understand the risks associated with running RC software (i’m running the 11.0 RC…) and would like to try the Mesa 7.1 RC on my hardware. Does anyone have any idea how to do that?
You are more than able to update to Mesa 7.1 on your current system or in 11.0 provided that you can find a package for them or compile it from source. The main concern is stability, which is more than likely the reason that it will not be shipped by default. That was nice of the mesa maintainer to give you that information.
