Quickcam E3500 gives weird video

Hello,

I have just upgraded to 11.2 and then got a new Logitech Quickcam E3500. I read a bit about it in this forum because I am new to using this webcam, and tried to run luvcview and kopete.

In luvcview I get a window that shows a broken image which shifts to the left in bits - top half, bottom quarter, etc. - and the colours flicker wildly in separate parts of the image. The shell from which it was launched gives this output:
luvcview version 0.2.1
Video driver: x11
A window manager is available
video /dev/video0

Any of the controls I try gives me errors, such as:
Set Auto Exposure on error
Set Auto Exposure on error
Set Auto Exposure on error
Set Auto Exposure on error

I closed this program and ran kopete, which showed me no image at all but gave this output on the shell:
Calling appendChild() on a null node does nothing.
Calling appendChild() on a null node does nothing.
Calling appendChild() on a null node does nothing.

I don’t know what any of this means.

Finally, I checked lsusb:
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 046d:09a4 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam E 3500

appears to detect the webcam correctly.

Can anyone please advise on this?

Thanks,

Abe

I had the same problem with a logitech quikcam and used cheese to access and run it without problems, but mine wasn’t the model you have.

You can try a more recent version of luvcview from packman.

Many thanks to both of you. I tried cheese and it works without difficulty, but now I try to use the webcam with Skype and fail. In the “options” menu of Skype I see my webcam (under “video devices”) but when I press “test” I get nothing and that entire window freezes.

Regarding luvcview, I uninstalled and installed again I got the same version, but now it seems to work.

So the only mystery is why do cheese and luvcview work but Skype does not?

Thanks,

Abe

I am reposting this in the hope of some solution to the remaining problem:
Skype does not seem to work with my webcam although cheese and luvcview give a correct picture. When I try to activate video and press “test” in Skype the window freezes and I have to shutdown Skype and restart it. I can not use its video facility with this webcam.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

Thanks,

Abe
