Hi,
Could the howto submissions area be locked, so that people need permission
to write there? Or that you need to be a year old user to be allowed to
write? Or that a new user has to fill a questionnaire for their first few
posts?

that sounds a lot like something i suggested a week or so as i
‘reported’ one of the several new poster’s questions there…

We’re kicking around some ideas on how to deal with this issue, but like
both of you, we’ve noticed the increase in people asking questions in
sections marked as “this isn’t a support forum”.

Yep, I guess 
Just let them write, the ask “are you sure?” five times. Or let the post,
if the user is new, be revised by someone first. I think that is a feature
of forums, isn’t? Should not be too difficult to implement.
I guess they think “howto” means “ask here how to do whatever”.

While the instructions seem pretty clear, they aren’t completely unambiguous to someone who has difficulty with English.
‘this isn’t a support forum’ is in danger of being read as ‘this isn’t a supported forum’ which wouldn’t be enough to stop someone posting, even if they have no idea of what support they aren’t getting.
Similarly, ‘Please don’t ask product questions here’ is susceptible to the argument ‘I didn’t have a product question…I only had a question about this software’.
Now you could change the latter to ‘Please don’t ask questions here’, but I really don’t think that it would make much difference; I suspect that some people are so determined to post that they don’t read this stuff. short of forcing to go through a menu system which forces them to answer the question “Is this a question?” and directing the post appropriately I don’t think there is a cure…and it maybe not even then do you get an absolute cure.

Thanks for the feedback. We do have some mechanisms that might help, and
I’ve got a discussion going amongst staff to see if one of those
mechanisms might make sense in this case.

So the system would have to force them through a filter. It can be
automatic, or manual: for example, the post from a new poster has to be
reviewed by peers - if it is just for that purpose, not others. Ie,
verifying that the chosen forum is the correct one.
