Questions about upgrading to KDE 4.3.4

I have the KDE 4.3.1 that came with OpenSUSE 11.2. I am thinking of upgrading to KDE 4.3.4 and had some questions:

  1. Will I lose the openSUSE green theme/look&feel?
  2. Is it considered stable (not by KDE but by reg. users)?
  3. Does it run faster/smoother than 4.3.1? Is it worth it?
  4. What repositories do I need to do this? Should I do it through YAST, zypper?

Many users have upgraded, but I wouldn’t say there was a massive benefit in doing so. And from what I know/have been informed the upgrade will feed through regular updates eventually, so no need to add repo’s. So you could wait it out and see.
Others may have more info on this.

I’m using the repo upgrade on my main box and it’s fine.

Add these:

Desktop kde4.3
Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/STABLE:/Desktop/openSUSE_11.2

Community kde4.3
Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.2

Once added do this on each of them

You will then need to do this again on Packman

No, if you get it from the openSUSE KDE repository it’s very openSUSE.

It’s very stable, the most stable KDE4 I’ve used.

I think it’s worth it, if I remember correctly, it contains a lot of bug
fixes which is why it’s so stable.

add the repository
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/STABLE:/Desktop/openSUSE_11.2/

You can do this with zypper by typing:

zypper ar <uri> <alias>

eg:

zypper ar
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/STABLE:/Desktop/openSUSE_11.2/ KDE4

then set the priority to the new repository higher than the others:

zypper mr -p <priority> <alias>

eg:

zypper mr -p 90 KDE4

Then run distribution upgrade on the new repository:

zypper dup -r <alias>]

zypper dup -r KDE4

It will install a lot of upgrades.

Don’t want to seem controversial to Barry, but it is no longer necessary to change repo priority in 11.2. Just use the package switcher. And in the order I showed them done. Otherwise you might loose control of packages like k3b which should be from packman.

zypper dup -r <alias>

is ok too

Thanks for the correction Carl, I didn’t know that priorities don’t need
to be changed in 11.2.

Out of curiosity, why is Packman needed? Why is an upgrade to an official desktop like KDE (and for the official version/release by OpenSUSE) requiring a 3rd party repo like packman?

I’m doing the “switch to this version” but now I’m getting a conflict. What do I choose to do?

k3b-codecs…requires k3b = 1.69, but this requirement cannot be provided

It says it deleted the k3b provider and the k3b packman provider. Then it gives me three options:

  • install k3b from excluded repository
  • deinstall k3b
  • break k3b by ignoring dependencies

Which do I choose?

It’s actually “Software Management”, if you open that click the “View” button and select “Repositories” it will add a new tab, then click the “Repositories” tab and you will see that layout, hope that helps.

Thanks.

Responding to the original question

I am on KDE4.3.3 from KDE:KDE4:STABLE:Desktop and it still has all the great openSUSE looks I had before.

I’d say it feels it little faster and I while experienced some crashes in 4.3.1, this version has been rock solid to mee.
