question

Dear Sir/ Madam:

I was just wondering if,it’s possible that we can Os openSuse 11, configure like enterprise server for all the network service similar with DHCP, DNS, and etc.

I just want to know, could we use for the network server OpenSuse linux 11, but for the workstation windows XP.

I just would like to let you know that I am 29 years old and from Iran.

I do appreciate for your help and concern.

With regards

Hoordad Danesh:)

Enterprise server is stable and has direct company technical support. OpenSUSE changes approximately annually and is used as the source/proving ground from which enterprise version is derived. openSUSE has technical support from the community, e.g. in this forum.

Those are the principal differences. The software is functionally approximately the same. The windows/Linux networking capability is the same.

If you used 11.0 there are three options for the Desktop Environment:

  • Gnome
  • KDE 3.5.9
  • KDE 4.0

KDE 4.0 is experimental. You would not use KDE 4.0. The other two are superb.

I hope that helps.

You can. We use the enterprise version, SLES though. But you could
use openSUSE, just have to upgrade it more often because of its
limited lifetime of support.

AD servers (e.g. a domain controller) will need to update their
" zones inside of DNS. Right now we allow that in our bind (named)
configuration by IP address. In the future (if not already if you
are willing to upgrade bind manually) you can use some sort of
gss-api mechanism for the updates (a bit more secure). But frankly,
there are LOTS of protocols that don’t even have IP based security,
so I have no problem allowing the updating of the SRV "
” zones
by IP. We prevent the windows boxes (or any other box) from doing any
other kind of update, we prefer allowing ONLY the dhcp server to make the
DDNS entries. Also, we don’t segregate our dhcp DDNS updates into
a separate zone but manage all of our zones dynamically (which has
been possible now for many many years).

What I said above may be VERY hard to understand (sorry).

If you don’t have a domain controller (or any kind of domain
services), then the complicated part about “_” zones I mentioned isn’t
needed.

I was 29 once.

Hope I helped and did not confuse things for you.

I consider myself to be very good at BIND and DHCP.
