question from a newbie

Hi ,
I have my web development server on a CentOs 5 box , so I have a basic understanding how to set up and administrate a Linux operating system via the command line .
But I like to tray new thinks . On many forums I see that openSUSE is mentioned as a stable distro. Can you please point me to good recources for beginners .
And secondly what is the relation of SUSE and NOVEL ?

thanks for your attention .

i’ll answer the last first: like Red Hat sells support for their
enterprise linux made from the work of their community released
Fedora, Novell sells support to SUSE Linux Enterprise which is based
on the work done by the openSUSE community…

info for new folks: here is a posting from a couple of years ago which
should get you started http://tinyurl.com/3a5rong

now note a few things:
-some links may have changed
-i give both paths to generic Linux (which is ALSO good for your
CentOS, for example)
-and hints to info specific for openSUSE
-in the posting 11.2 is referenced, in most cases you can also find
specific 11.3 info nearby.

welcome!!

hi ,
thanks for your replay .
Sory that I insist , but from the operating system point of view , are the two operating systems compatible ?
If I learn to administrate a openSuse box , will the administration on a novel’s netware box similar ?
thanks again …

i really doubt if openSUSE and NetWare have much (if anything) in
common [but i wouldn’t know since i’ve never seen a NetWare]…do
they still have NetWare?

as for common between openSUSE and SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop or
Server: no idea on that either, except that most of the stuff you know
from CentOS is usable on both…but, some differences here and there…

Not really, because Novell (note the spelling  ) NetWare is a
discontinued product that is not based in any way on Linux or Unix.

Now, Novell’s Open Enterprise Server 2 product is a Linux-based
product, based on SLES 10 currently; some aspects of system management
would be the same (as they use YaST), and some would be different (as
they use iManager or other tools). As others have suggested, more detail
is available from the Novell forums at http://forums.novell.com or
through the OES2 documentation at http://www.novell.com/documentation
