AdRem Freecon on OpenSuse 11 is it possible?
As this question is for the Novell experts, wouldn’t it be better asked in the Novell forum ?
NOVELL FORUMS
Andy
Well pointed out and i have a similar post on their forums but i find that i get a quicker reply on these forums, helpful or not. The end result is to switch my Windows admin machine to openSUSE so in a way its an application i want to run on this platform and put out feelers to see if anyone had hit this stumbling block. Additionally i see posts from Novell volunteers on this site. You could point me to winhq (as i presume this would be the way to do things if its at all possible) but i have been there and there irc channel is full of School kids who know and hate netware and are not helpful at all. I have also emailed AdRem but no reply yet. If its a inappropriate post please remove it but i kinda guess that this is the place where we help each other learn. The novell admins guys will point me to web management but if you have used it you will know its not a patch on freecon for multiple servers and monitoring trace files etc… Regards one Puzzled Penguin.
The Adrem program is Windows based so unless you used an emulator I don’t think there is a way. Also the free version of Adrem seems to have been pulled by the suppliers.
Whilst I agree with your comments on managing multiple Netware servers, I suspect that Remote Manager will be the best way to go if you’re using Linux as the admin client.
Thanks for the reply Turners, i have a license for the product, the problem i am coming across is that wine does not appear to have a login system and therefore there is no gina for the Novell client to hook into (i may be wrong but the client install fails) and adrem freecon requires the client and certain dll’s to be loaded, although it does install without any problems. I was just wondering if anyone had found a work around for this kind of situation. If dll’s can be preloaded in wine and direct access to the hosts network would allow the product to run. It seems crazy that you have to run a windows platform to efficiently manage a Novell network. Dstrace with multiple IDM Netware servers is hard work with imanager. I cant fault opensuse as its an excellent OS and i use it at home now but i think that Novell should shape up and invest in management tools to allow an easy transition to Linux.

If you’re talking about managing from Linux, but managing NetWare and
you must get to the console AND Remote Manager isn’t working for you…
SSH is an option
rconj (RConsoleJ) is an option
If you move to Xen for your NetWare boxes (guests on SLES) you can
manage them via Xen applications
SSH takes some getting used to but works well on NetWare. I use rconj
exclusively to get to NetWare boxes now otherwise… it works very
nicely though obviously doesn’t have the drop-down list of servers that
can immediately be connected.
Otherwise feel free to submit an enhancement request via
support.novell.com for a tool. AdRem may be interested in this
enhancement request as well, since you’re asking specifically about
their own technology.
Good luck.

Cheers Ab, this is exactly what i am looking for, after connecting with SSH from my SUSE box its looking good, i will look at rconj later this week. I have submitted a request with AdRem but i think with Netware being a word from the past it may be a dead duck (thats if they get back to me at all). Thanks again you have got me one step closer to closing down my M$ box.
