Question/discussion: how to try Wayland?

Dear all,

Opensuse Leap since several years… Currently I use Xfce on X11. I am fine with Xfce — I don’t like Gnome nor KDE. I have looked at Cinnamon and MATE and LxQT once — but I like Xfce. I further use LightDM.

  • What do I have to use Wayland generally? (Like to see if my current applications do work with Wayland…)
  • Is it right, that for real DE there currently only are Gnome and KDE (which I both don’t like), LxQT is almost ready, Xfce is much work to be done yet?
  • What about things like Sway or Weston? I have heard about, but don’t know much… They are not real DE, are they. Can one use them instead? What are the circumstances?
  • I use LightDM as DM? What is to say about DM? Is such one still needed? If yes, which one?

TIA!

@C7NhtpnK Wayland will run fine on that hardware. I have CoffeLake running Aeon.

I’d suggest Sway or maybe Hyprland?

Important Notice: Please be aware that the Wayland support in Xfce 4.20 is experimental. It is recommended for advanced users only, as you may encounter bugs and experience incomplete functionality. Proceed with caution!

Thank you for sharing that URLs!

My current config is quite stable. Maybe wait, until it’s available officially… But I would really try Wayland as a second option to see if all my applications do already work with.

@Svyatko Do you know how to add Wayland support (for Xfce, yet)? So, I can use my LightDM for login and choose between an X or Wayland session? (I don’t want to mess or screw my system! That’s why I am asking so naively…)

Yes, you should be able to choose the desired desktop session regardless of the Display Manager in use.

ILL Xfce 4.20 is available with Update repos for Leap 15.6.

sudo zypper in xfce4-session-wayland-experimental

Should be the same for both TW and Leap.

OK. Thank you!
