Best regards

In kernel-desktop some compilation options have been changed to provide smoother experience for desktop usage (as in using a GUI; not as vs a laptop), otherwise they are identical.
And, on 32bit, kernel-default does not support PAE, i.e. the maximum RAM is less than 4GiB. But there’s also kernel-pae which does support it.

you will loose all the nice goodies that openSUSE team has included in
the kernel unless you use kernel-desktop.

GNOME 3.10.1
openSUSE 13.1 (Bottle) (x86_64) 64-bit
Kernel Linux 3.11.6-4-desktop
Kernel-default is only better on a server environment - for any laptop/desktop installation should use -desktop.

To elaborate, default runs the scheduler less frequently (250 times/sec) than
does desktop (1000 times/sec). That means that default has lower kernel
overhead, but the keyboard and mouse responsiveness is somewhat reduced.
As to any openSUSE goodies added to kernels, I never use then as I always run
kernels that are self-generated from the official kernel sources. So far, I have
not found anything that was needed. In fact, openSUSE is gradually reducing the
goodies due to the effort needed to maintain them.

default - as the name suggests the default openSUSE Kernel for desktop
and servers
desktop - a desktop tuned Kernel which favors boot times and responsiveness
GNOME 3.10.1
openSUSE 13.1 (Bottle) (x86_64) 64-bit
Kernel Linux 3.11.6-4-desktop
