Q: Opensuse 11.1 w/ Phenom 955 and old ATI X300 video card

Hi *,

I’ve just built up a new machine as my potential VM server and face several woes.
It’s a AMD Phenom X4 955 CPU, 12GB RAM on a Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD7 board. I installed my old video card, a PCI-E ATI X300 Radeon which would be fine.
I wanted to use either VMware Server 2.0.2 on Opensuse 11.1 (>11.1 doesn’t work anymore) or Virtualbox on 11.3. Since I have no experience with VirtualBox, I don’t know if I still can use my old VMs.

Installation of 11.1 fails even during very first kernel load displaying the error “pci 0000:00:00.0: BAR 3: can’t allocate resource”.
What does that mean? Could it be that my video card isn’t recognized/addressed at boot up?

Installation of 11.3 would be fine. But I see graphical artifacts on my KDE desktop. Unless 11.3 provides much better hardware usage, I’d be fine with 11.1.

Preferably I would be interested in getting to know why OpenSusi 11.1 refuses to get installed.
I greatly appreciate your help!
Nic
