As i understand, after autofs unmounts disk (network or otherwise) it keeps spinning. It costs energy, so i wonder is there any way to put hard disk to idle state after autofs timeout kicks in?

thnx Robin for tip. War very helpful. Although in the end i have started using laptop_mode (daemon from laptop-mode-tools package), which of course is scripting way of using hdparm.
And i also found very useful tool powertop.

There is a small utility which runs as a service called spindown for powering down idle drives
I believe it’s just a daemon that makes use of hdparm’s ‘put drive in standby mode’ switch
Should be able to find it either over at software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 11.3 or with Yast’s Webpin if you wanna take a look at it
