Proton bridge for proton email stopped working

I installed proton email with proton linux bridge about a year ago. I bareley use it. I did run it through thunderbird. I tried running it today.

Proton bridge has stopped running. Messages from a terminal start of proton bridge are below. Apparently some type of qt problem.

(base) tom@mydesktop: ~ $ protonmail-bridge

There must be others using proton email. Any insights please.

thanks, tom kosvic

I did some research:

sudo zypper se libQt6Core
sudo zypper info libQt6Core6

That last command gives:

Version : 6.10.0-2.1

As zypper did not know you did need the 6.8 version, it did update to the latest version.

That is already some time, I see that on 20250917 libQt6Core6-6.9.2.

I see the 3 private packages on build.opensuse.org as all not-building and need update.

You should have started your research with looking at the distribution tag of this topic.

Leap 15.6 has libQt6Core6 6.6.3.

It sounds like your software updated itself to the new version which requires more recent Qt6 than what is available on Leap 15.6. As “Proton Mail Bridge is available only with a paid plan that includes Proton Mail”, you should contact Proton support for which you pay.

I do have a paid proton plan and proton bridge was working initially when first installed about a year ago.

proton-bridge did update. I did not do this intentionally and I think zypper updates did not do it.

I also checked libbQt6Core6 I have installed and info is below. No ref to qt6.8.

Proton bridge did exist as an applet in my mate panel. It is now gone.

I have sent the error message I showed above to protonmail support.

FWIW protonmail-bridge v3.21.2 working fine on Leap 16.0
(libQt6Core6 version 6.9.1)

@seb_fr_62,

thanks for info. Maybe I will do upgrade to leap 16 sooner than planned if proton email is working on that.

tom kosvic

For the sake of completeness, it’s the flatpack version of the bridge which is working.

Proton bridge reinstalled itself and started running as far as I can see. I think an update in the last few days solved the qt problem somehow. The proton-bridge icon is even back in the mate panel.

I did reboots and restarts immediately after I noticed proton-bridge being gone and it wouldn’t restart showing the error I presented initially. Magically it has now started working.

I have gotten nothing useful from proton support. They asked for log files and there are a hundred of them. I asked if they want early ones or later ones. No response.

There is a date gap in the log files from 10/18 to 10/20. Normally there are 4 or 5 a day.
I’ll look at the updates I installed on 10/20.

thanks, tom kosvic

Installed updates on 10/19 and 10/20 include nothing with qt in name

Protonmail-bridge has restarted as I said above but is not working in thunderbird desktop which it used to. From another account in thunderbird, I sent email to my proton account. It was not received in thunderbird account. It was, however, received in proton webmail. Thus proton account is working but linux bridge is not.

Again, no response from proton support.

thanks for any suggestions. tom kosvic

Here’s response (finally) from protonmail.

Per the logs it looked like you're using an older version of Bridge. However, it seems that Bridge stopped working on your side after updating to Bridge 3.19. This is the version where QT 6.8 became a requirement.

You can install Bridge 3.18 from Github and disable automatic updates to ensure it does not update.
https://github.com/ProtonMail/proton-bridge/releases/tag/v3.18.0

If you can, the better option is to update QT to 6.8 or newer which will let you use newer versions of Bridge. However, as a quicker and safer solution at this time, you can use Bridge 3.18.0

First, I installed, 3 days ago, ProtonMail-bridge 3.21 through an rpm from their website. That is what I am currently trying to get running and which does not run. Also, I never did any conscious upgrades from original install . Upgrades must have been done by protonmaii itself.

Secondly, to install qt_6.8 appears, from qt website, to be a compilation that only shows applicability to leap 15.5; not 15.6. This gives me some doubts. It is a very significant compilation.

Third, does leap 16 include qt_6.8 so an upgrade to leap 16 might get past this problem?

thanks, tom kosvic
