When openSUSE 11.4 was released I requested and received a marketing packet of DVDs, stickers and more for passing out at the computer club’s monthly meeting.
The DVDs were great because I could boot into a live Gnome session, or a live KDE session, or install from the DVD!
Does the DVD image downloaded include these features, or is this only on the marketing promotional DVDs?
Unfortunately my internet connection speeds is really, really slow (~ 15 hours to download 1 DVD, 2-3 hours for a live CD) but would be worth it if it offers this flexibility. That’s why I haven’t done it yet.
If the base download version does not include these live images, is there a place where I can download this sort of DVD?
The DVD that you would normally download includes only the installer and a rescue mode. It does not include a live system.
If you purchase a DVD, that possibly will be a double layer DVD (higher capacity), with installer and live systems. However, I’m not sure about that. The last time that I purchased the DVD, was for 11.3. And that turned out to include two DVDs. One of them was a double layer DVD where I could choose to install either 32 bit or 64 bit. The other DVD was a live KDE system (it might have actually been a CD rather than a DVD), and I could install from the live boot if I so chose.
My guess is that the marketing package you saw was specially built for marketing.
I have here one of those marketing DVDs (inclusing some stickers) for version 12.1. They were distributed at the Dutch openSUSE 12.1 Release Party last year. And earlier we had the same for 11.4. They are realy nice.
It takes some time after the release of an openSUSE version before they are available. My suggestion would be to ask the same channel you got the earlier one from.
That was the other thing that was cool about them. One side was 32bit everything while the other side was 64bit. That one DVD had everything you needed to get started. I’ll have to dig up my previous contact.
These would be good enough to spend the money to purchase since like I said it give you everything you could need to get started (Live sessions, 32 & 64 bit, DVD installer, everything!)
Yes, correct. I forgot, but the two sided thing is marvelous.
When they are produced, I will probably be able to get a few at the next openSUSE 12.2 Release Party (or Novell will distribute them to the wanting afterwards). I realy do not know how diffuicult it is (red tape in the post/customs) to send you one (when I get them). But I could give it a try when you like that.
