problems with wusb54gc

Allright, I read the sticky and came up with the following:

I have no “lsusb” dir but yast recognizes the device:

<6>usb 1-2: New USB device found, idVendor=13b1, idProduct=0020
<6>usb 1-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
<6>usb 1-2: Product: Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter
<6>usb 1-2: Manufacturer: Cisco-Linksys
<7>phy0: Selected rate control algorithm ‘pid’
<6>usbcore: registered new interface driver rt73usb
<3>phy0 -> rt2x00lib_request_firmware: Error - Failed to request Firmware.
<6>usb 1-2: USB disconnect, address 3

some other things I found:

Model: “Linksys Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter”
Hotplug: USB
Vendor: usb 0x13b1 “Linksys”
Device: usb 0x0020 “Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter”
Revision: “0.01”
Speed: 12 Mbps
Module Alias: “usb:v13B1p0020d0001dc00dsc00dp00icFFiscFFipFF”
Driver Info #0:
Driver Status: rt73usb is not active
Driver Activation Cmd: “modprobe rt73usb”
Config Status: cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown
Attached to: #52 (Hub)

Well this is all chinese to me.

I think firmware is not the problem (the thing is brand new)and with the iwconfig I get nothing except “lo …”

Can someone help? Please keep it simple.

Thanks,
Jan

I got mine working by following the directions here:

Download - Linux Wireless

The driver you want to install is: rt73usb

In a nutshell:

Install kernel-headers from the repos

Download the tarball for your kernel version

Untar the package.

Do “make”

Do “sudo make install”

Do “sudo modprobe rt73usb”

The instructions are there but you have to do some reading to get to the crux of the matter.
