I’ve installed both banashee and vlc…
I’m a newbie in using opensuse and linux in general…
In vlc the picture comes but the sound won’t…
In banashee the sound comes but the picture won’t and it asks to install codec… I tried installing some codec from softpedia but it never helped… Is there some source to install all codecs through the package manager… something like an equivalent of K lite codec in windows… please suggest… I get really lost when i read some of the solutions in other threads… since I’m a newbie please be more detailed
Typically installing codecs via the Software package manager is what I always do. Now I never use Banshee, so I can not provide advice there, but I have been known to use vlc on occasion, and I can provide some general advice there.
Typically, the very 1st thing I do after establishing Internet connectivity on a new openSUSE install, is setup my Software Package Manager with 4 repositories (where repositories (repos) are file servers on the internet that contain applications, codecs, etc … for your openSUSE). I recommend you add 4 repos and ONLY 4 repos. The 4 are OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman. Just those 4. No others. None. You can add more when you learn the risks, problems, hiccups, and how to recover from problems by having too many repositories. There is guidance here for adding those 4: Repositories - openSUSE-Community If you are using openSUSE-11.0, then click on the 11.0 link and follow the guidance. Again, only OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman. If you added other repos, then remove them.
In particular, videolan repos is known to have incompatibility problems with its codecs with packman packaged players. So remove the videolan if selected.
Now after having setup those 4 repos, you can update your software by going to YaST > Software > Software Management and change the filter to search and mark for removal “xine-lib” but do not apply it. Then mark for installation “libxine1” packaged by Packman. Then apply both.
Then also install packman packaged versions of libffmpeg0, vlc, smplayer, xvid, libquicktime0. You must replace the videolan packaged versions (and their dependencies) with the packman packaged versions.
Once that is done, there is a resonable chance you audio/video problems will be solved.
But a couple of other things can cause you problems. If you have special desktop effects enabled (such as “3D” or “the cube” ) then your video may not work properly. You may have to disable special desktop effects, or may may need to go to your media players setup and change the “output video module” from “auto” (or from “xv” (xvideo)) to “x11”.
Also if using Intel graphics, you may need to either go to your media players setup and change the “output video module” from “auto” (or from “xv” (xvideo)) to “x11” or find an update to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to enable you to play video.
