Problems with Samba

I had Samba working and now since switching to Leap 15.1 it stopped working. So here I am at back at the beginning. I tried setting the smb.config to what I remembered and that didn’t work so I tried Swerdna’s set up and that didn’t work either. While I entered systemctl status nmb and smb and got good results (didn’t see any errors and they were running). The Windows 10 machine still couldn’t find the Linux shares though that machine can ping the Linux machine.

Also, can setting up the user/password for Samba be done through Yast’s Security and Users? Seems this would be a good way to do so.

Thanks,

Scott

You’ll have to clarify what you mean by “switching to Leap 15.1”
Did you upgrade?
Is this a new install?

Also, pinging only verifies a working network connection.
If you pinged the IP address, then that’s only basic network connectivity.
Did you ping the machine by the name your SMB shares might be configured to use? If that fails, that woudl suggest a name resolution problem.
Did you telnet the SMB port? If that fails, then that might suggest a firewall problem.

Do you mean it just can’t discover the samba host? Can you reach it by IP address? eg \192.168.0.14

AFAIR, webmin is the only graphical method available, otherwise stay with using smbpasswd.

Hi!

15.1 XFCE x86_64. I set up Samba shares, it works in principle.

Virtually all Windows sees is that I type the IP address directly. When you open it on the network, the share does not appear.

testparm shows everything as good. Both machines are on Wi-Fi on the same network. Apparently all is well, I knew I missed one step because I did it as described.

Where should I go for him?

Thanks in advance!

Hi nagylaca. Please start your own thread to get the help that you are requesting, rather than tacking on to someone else’s thread.

Okay, I just didn’t want to burden the forum

No, it doesn’t burden the forum. We are here as volunteers to help other fellow users. The idea of creating a dedicated thread is to help direct the attention of those that can help and keep the conversation centred on the OP’s issue. Of course there are times where an issue is common to multiple users, but more often we find seemingly similar issues may be due to different underlying causes.
