I have a Classic iPod (sixth generation, I think). I attempted to set it up with the latest Banshee 1.2.1. When I start Banshee, it froze. It said it couldn’t read my iPod directory because I had a newer version of iTunes. It asked if I wanted it to redo the directory. I clicked yes. Now I can’t access my iPod at all.
(By the way: I’m running KDE and there’s a KDE Kio something that can read the contents of my iPod, so I copied the contents into the home directory so I wouldn’t lose it.)
I’m not sure what to do. In attempts to get something working, I tried gtkpod, which loaded some stuff on my iPod, but it’s still inaccessible. I tried Amarok, but it didn’t do anything except say there was something on my iPod.
Should I uninstall all media players and reinstall Banshee only?
Should I reload my iPod on a Windows machine?
(I tried running iTunes on Wine and a Crossover trial demo, but got nowhere.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated! I’m sure others are having this problem too!
Hi,
well you definitely cannot run Itunes on any Linux system, quite a few tried before you and didnt succeed. I have an Ipod Nano 4GB (silver) and the only app that it really worked with was Amarok. It worked actually better then ITunes itself because Itunes sometimes didnt move artwork to all the songs onto Ipod (I think this was solved in latest Itunes, not sure though). Why am I writing this in the past tense? Because it all worked under Ubuntu. Now Im back with OpenSuse and its a bit more tricky. Sometimes it doesnt add Ipod into Amarok at all even when the ipod is mounted correctly in the system, sometimes it shows it correctly. I will need to look into it more closely and find a solution, I just found out last night and didnt have too much time to solve it… However, I just wanted to say that my experience is that Amarok from all Linux apps works best with Ipod. Not sure if it actually answered your question…
One more thing, you should be able to format/reset your Ipod to factory settings. This might be the solution for you as you mentioned you did back-up. Try to search one of the Ipod geeks web pages or apple home page…
You may still have troubles with the database format used by the latest iTunes, but you will be able to mount the ipod as a mass storage device and import your music.
