i´m trying to install openSuse 11.2 from DVD. All seems to be fine. But when the automatic configuration starts ( same problem by manual configuration) the system hangs. I´d checked the installation medium and it has no error.
If also tryed the NET INST with the Server download.opensuse.org ./distribution/11.2/repo/oss
and the system hangs too.
My System :
Fujitsu Siemens Amilo M 7400 [1500Mhz 768Mb RAM 80GB HDD]
Win XP is running well on this System.
My wife and I have a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M7400 (w/1.2GB RAM), and currently we have openSUSE-11.1 running on it. I recommend you forget 11.2 for now, and instead install 11.1 on it.
The problem is 11.2’s 2.6.31 kernel does not work well with the Intel 855GM graphics on that laptop. This incompatibility with the 2.6.31 kernel is not only true for openSUSE, but for EVERY other Linux distribution. Its truly unfortunate.
I also documented my experiences with the Amilo 7400 here in the HCL (and thus far no one has contradicted me): HCL/Laptops/Fujitsu - openSUSE
If you are determined to use 11.2, then if you use the boot code “acpi=off” it will eventually boot properly, but it will be VERY slow in booting.
I do not know the implications of running all the time with acpi=off, and I would be concerned about possible power management problems (which could be risky to hardware). Plus with 11.2 and acpi=off I do not think the special desktop effects will work, while with 11.1 they will work.
Fortunately 11.1 runs well, and after installing 11.1 (with its buggy KDE-4.3.1) if you are a KDE4 user and you add the repository:
you should be able to update to KDE-4.3.5 (although you may need to work through a few dependency hiccups).
At least that was my assessment (I have KDE-4.3.4 running on it … and have not yet updated to KDE-4.3.5), and if you can manage to get 11.2 working without acpi=off I would be most interested to learn.
Good luck, and please let us know what you learn. Having the same laptop maybe we can learn from each other.
