Problems with HP DV5 1040eg - linux newbie

Hi, I have several problems with my HP laptop and Opensuse,

please don’t tell me I should use the search function, I allready searched here, at ubuntuusers and at google.
probably I do something wrong, I’m a linux newb…

the major problem is the sound issue, I get sound only on my two headphone outputs (yes funily I have two outputs),I recognized that the volume is much less then it is on windows.
the internal speaker and mic doesn’t work.

for the Sound issue I tried several things, I updated alsa,
I moded etc\modprobe.d\Sound with modelname after intel hda
and several other things…
I googled for hours but I didn’t came to a solution…
:’(

this is also broken but not that important to me:

At Cheese I only get about 1 or 2 FPS from the webcam, no smooth Video.

Sometimes Opensuse doesn’t mount USB flash drives with NTFS, HDs are mounted.

At HP Quicktouch normaly the led is blue if Wlan is on and red if of, at opensuse it is blue, and it flackers red blue if wlan is sending or receiveing, If I press this quicktouch button I’m not able to reenable wlan again.

When I try to adjust Screen Res at Login Screen he doesn’t accept it.

My Specs:
HP Pavilion Notebook DV5 1040eg
CPU Intel C2D PM7350 @ 2.00 GHZ
Mainboard: Quanta 3603
Northbridge: Intel PM45
Southbridge: Intel ICH9M
LAN: Realtek RTL8168c/8111c
WLAN: Intel Wifi Link 5100 AGN
Sound: IDT 92HD71B7
Grafik: 9600m GT DDR2 512mb Ram
Webcam: from HP probably

I would be verry happy if you could help me, I have enough of linux today, it’s 4.34 AM lol!
I’m a linux newb, please propose your solution in a way that a advanced windows user can understand it:) ty

I’ve been using Linux since 1998 and not Windows at home, so I suspect I am not capable of translating this into language a Windows user can understand. … You could try brushing up on openSUSE Linux concepts: Concepts - openSUSE or surf for other beginners manuals, … or waiting and maybe someone who “speaks windows” can translate for you.

Anyway, in order to help, I need more information …

If using openSUSE-11.1, with your PC connected to the Internet, please copy and paste the following into a gnome-terminal or a kde konsole:
/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh
that will give you a URL. Please post ONLY the URL here. NOT the rest. JUST the URL.

Also, please copy and paste the following one line at a time into a konsole or gnome terminal and post here the output:
rpm -qa | grep alsa
rpm -qa | grep pulse
rpm -q libasound2
uname -a
cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound

Sorry, I surely know what terminal is, and I roughly know some commands, my System is Opensuse 11.1 and I have Gnome.

If I type

/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh

into the terminal it says something about alsa Info script v 0.4.53 and asks me if I want to run this script- the only link is Main Page - AlsaProject

If I put this into terminal

rpm -qa | grep alsa
rpm -qa | grep pulse
rpm -q libasound2
uname -a
cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound

I get this:

linux-ujfw:/home/F1ckratte # rpm -qa | grep alsa
alsa-oss-1.0.17-1.37
alsa-utils-1.0.18-6.4
alsa-plugins-pulse-1.0.18-6.12

The model behind the snd-hda-intel was written by me.
At ubuntu the Sound came out of the speakers, but also somehow more quiet.

I hope you have got better information now :slight_smile:

PS: how do I highlite the things green which came out of terminal, like you did?

```php
Please try again. Its actually fairly simple. Copy and paste into the terminal, with your PC connected to the internet:
/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh
When it asks you if you wish to run the script, the “YES” is typically highighted. Simply press “enter” for the “YES”. When it tells you about a newer version of alsa-info, select “NO” for now (you can apply an update later). You can move the selection with your keyboard arrow keys. It will ask if you wish to see the uploaded info. Select NO. (Yes also works, but its a bit more complex, and I think that is beyond your capabilities as you could not get this far the first time). It will then state something like
Your ALSA information is located at http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=1cafc1fdb878e052d703e860c0007ef70dc17df2
Please inform the person helping you.
Hey, even an MS-Windows user should be able to figure this out.
If you still have problems, try running it with root permissions. ie try:
su -c '/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh’and enter root password when prompted. Post here the URL that you are provided.
I believe you will need to update your alsa version. Please open a gnome terminal, and type “su” (no quotes, enter root password when prompted) to get root permissions. Then copy and paste the following 6 commands, in sequence, one-by-one, into that gnome terminal when your PC is connected to the Internet:
zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/multimedia:/audio/openSUSE_11.1/ multimedia
zypper install alsa alsa-utils alsa-oss alsa-plugins alsa-plugins-pulse alsa-tools alsa-firmware libasound2
zypper rr multimedia
zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/multimedia:/audio:/KMP/openSUSE_11.1/ multimedia
zypper install alsa-driver-kmp-pae
zypper rr multimedia
and then restart your PC, and test your sound.
I suspect the sound will still not work. But that is expected. So if it still does not work, then you need to edit your /etc/modprobe.d/sound file. Do that by typing:
gnomesu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/sound
and change that file, so that the entire file now looks like:
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=hp-m4 enable_msi=1
and then restart your PC and test your sound.
If that does not work, then in the file /etc/modprobe.d/sound, change “hp-m4” to “dell-m4-1” and restart your PC and test the audio. If “dell-m4-2” does not work, then replace “dell-m4-1” with “dell-m4-2” and restart your PC and test your audio.
In all cases, when testing your sound, you need to check your mixer (alsamixer, I think under gnome) to ensure both your PCM and master volume levels are at 95% for the test (backoff the volume to a lower level to reduce distortion once sound is working).
When testing your sound, please copy and paste the following into a gnome terminal as the speaker-test: speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twavif your sound works, you should hear a lady’s voice saying ‘FRONT LEFT’, ‘FRONT RIGHT’ five times.
Well ok, it worked now after a reboot, at first, it just gone back to terminal console whe I pressed Yes at the first screen.
Now I’m going to restart, and if it doesn’t work then im going to mod that sound file.
thanks for helping, wow at m$ you won’t get help like that, they don’t care a sh*t, but I really like this here, great help and great comunety :slight_smile:
After editing the Soundfile I’ve got Sound on internal Speakers, Headphones also DO work!!! You are the man! :slight_smile:
can you tell me how to test the internal mic??
I also recognized that my laptop fan is running at full speed at opensuse, get’s annoying at a time… You know how to let suse handle the fan speeds?
I did do something in pulseaudio because the mic mic did not work, I don’t exactly know what it was, but now I’m getting no sound :’(
is there a way of defaulting these options?
Congratulations. What edit do you do to the /etc/modprobe.d/sound file?
I don’t know if the internal mics work. Did you try an external mic?
You may have better luck if you start a new thread for this with the Title: "How to stop laptop fan from running at full speed? "
If you do not know what you did, there is no possible way I can guess.
Next time you start messing with settings, record what the default values are. Either write them down, or do a print-screen and save the jpg from that.
I recommend you take a hard look at your mixer settings.
