In VLC and Dragon player I only get cracking noises instead of audio playback on a DVD. SMplayer will work but this player jumps straight to track 1 and does not go to the menu on the DVD. I would like to get VLC to work with DVDs if possible. I think I have all the codecs I need.
Any ideas gratefully received.

Did you do a vendor change to packman?

Davidt welcome to openSUSE and welcome to our forum.
Let us know if you are not familiar with the ‘packman repository’ - for if you are not (familiar) we can explain this.

I have the packman repository added. I’m not sure how to do a vendor change.

As requested.
BTW you don’t need 2 could cause problems with mixed packages
You need 1 or 4 not both depending on your video card
7 only needed once there are no updates can be removed or disabled
8 is a duplicate of 3 can be removed
It is best to keep the number of repos limited

try
sudo zypper dup --from 3
unfortunately I still get just a crackle with DVD sound on vlc and Dragon player does not work either. Kaffeine works fine as well as SMplayer. it doesn’t really matter but I like to resolve things.

i can seem to be able to rip a DVD with k3b which i could not before.
Maybe install pavucontrol and use it to see if that resolves the sound problems.

well yes packman has the restricted codecs as well as k3b plugins, if you have volume issues check and see what card is selected it might be the hdmi audio out from the graphic card
note that volume with pulse is application specific so you need to be running the app to see it’s settings in pavucontrol
