Problems with compiz functionality.

I have two issues with the functionality of compiz on my new installation that I would appreciate advice on. Only the first issue is actually significant (at least to me).

  1. When I have multiple windows open I have a problem where only one can be consistently interacted with from a desktop management point of view (move, raise, resize etc). For example, if I move my mouse to the title bar of one window and left-click to move it, instead of getting a hand icon and moving the window, I get a resize icon and the movement of the mouse will resize a different window. The other window will not have had the focus at the time it is resized, and the system become somewhat unresponsive for a few seconds. If I have more than two windows open the issue is the same for all other windows, with the window being resized always being the same.

If I keep compiz as my session manager but turn off desktop effects this problem goes away. I have tried turning on and off some of the effects (like wobbly windows) without any success. It also does not seem to matter what windows are opened or in what order. If the ‘primary’ window is closed whichever happens to be on top becomes the new primary.

Without the ability to raise a window to the top directly (window picker and such still work to do so) or move/resize windows as needed obviously prevents me from being able to use compiz.

  1. I’m underwhelmed by the rotate cube effect. In some of the youtube demos, it looked like you could grab the cube edges and control the rotation of the cube. I presumed by using the mouse in some way. However, I find that all I can do is flip the cube around left/right. Even after enabling the pointer to work for cube rotation all that added was an ability to flip the cube by moving the mouse to one edge of the screen. While playing with the sensitivity and speed I was able to get a little control, it was still in no way direct. Is this really all there is, or am I missing something?

Thanks!!!

Hi
Have you tried ctrl+alt+mouse left button to control cube movement?

Fantastic! That was exactly what I was looking for, thanks!

(now hopefully someone will have an idea on fixing the first problem so I can use it! )

Hi
For issue number 1 what happens if you hold the alt key then select the
window title?
Which ever desktop you are using, look in the personal settings/control
center and look for the ‘window’ option, I’m sure this is where you can
change this.

Aha! I don’t know how I missed this with my initial searches, but this post in a previous thread on this issue (Compiz window focus problem on openSUSE 11 - openSUSE Forums) actually solves the problem.

Basically the default SUSE 11 / KDE 4 + compiz is buggy. However if you update to the latest compiz packages from the openSUSE X11:XGL repository that appears to get cleared up. It’s unfortunate that the main distribution hasn’t updated to take care of the bugginess. But everything seems to be working well for me now!

Thanks everyone!
