First of all I have absolutely 0 experience with linux and i apologize if i ask stupid or obvious questions. Second i truly tried to search for answers but everything seems to be referring to using shell from inside linux.
I copied the installation file to a USB using ImageUSB. I access the USB successfully. But if I try to “check installation media” or follow the installation procedure i always get stuck as loading screen. If i click one of the arrows it shows the following:
intel wireless 3165
drivers: iwlwifii*
It gets stuck here everytime.
I am currently using windows 10. I disabled secured boot as I have a UEFI system. I formated my USB with NTFS file system before i copied the installation media to it. I am using Dell laptob with NV GTX 960M 4GB GDDR5, Intel 3165ac + BT4.0 for wireless, 8GB DDR3L Ram, 500GB Samsung SSD, and i7 processor.
I read all the guides at opensuse documents but i can’t find my answer. I also tried searching the forums.
So does anyone know why i get stuck? and was i correct in disabling secure boot and formatting the usb with NTFS file system?
I also want to mention i did not use legacy to boot, i always boot from the UEFI screen.
Do not format the usb with ntfs, ntfs on usb is pointless and can cause trouble, the opensuse installer was made to be run from an optical disk not a usb, that does not mean it can not be run from a usb
Assuming you only have access to windows do the following #1 format the usb with fat32 #2 get ruffus (it’s free) https://rufus.akeo.ie/ #3 write the iso image in dd mode, to do that start rufus press alt+I select the iso and write it in dd mode, read the rufus faq for more info https://github.com/pbatard/rufus/wiki/FAQ#live-media-issuesjust don’t forget to run the installer in uefi mode do not mix mbr and efi
Thank you so much for your help, but that didn’t work. In rufus, I chose the following:
Partition: GPT Paritioning for UEFI
Filesystem: FAT32
cluster size: 32 kilobytes (default)
Create bootable disk using DD Image
I still get stuck at a black screen with a bunch of writing that ends in
intel wireless 3165
drivers iwlwifi*
could it be a problem with my wireless driver? are we sure i am getting stuck because the image is not done correctly?
I’m not sure what you are trying to do, gpt partitioning of the usb why, the installer expects to be run from a dvd on an iso file system not a ntfs gpt partitioned hard disk.
are you using the usb as instalation source or you want to install to the usb? #1 if you are using it as installation medium do not mess with gpt, use a single regular mbr partition you can not use gpt on installation medium (maybe you can but don’t)
a) in windows format the usb with fat32 don’t play with the options you can even do a fast format.
b) start rufus press both the alt and I keys to make it run in dd mode, click the browse button to select the open suse iso and write the image in dd mode (it will write a raw iso file system not fat nor ntfs)
c) in bios or during boot press F12 or whatever to select the boot medium, select the usb, the opensuse installer will start, in the menu bellow select uefi install and follow the on screen instruction #2 you want to install opensuse on a usb drive, I don’t think you can install it in uefi mode I haven’t done it but it’s possible try this https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Installation_on_external_hard_drive
Thank you so much for your help. I am trying to install opensuse on my hardisk. I plan to let opensuse do the partitioning. I know it’s going to shrink my current drive and create new ones, i have plenty of space so i am not worries about that. I successfully created the USB and I can boot it just like you instructed. I read on this forum on another thread that i have to do check installation media before i install. When I do that I get stuck on a black screen with the following information:
activating usb device… ok
lexar jumdrive
drivers: was, usv_storage*
atmel maxtouch dgitizer
drivers: usbhid*
Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI express gigabteteret controlr
drivers: r8169*
intel wireless 365
drivers: iwlwifi*
Everytime the same thing happens. Even if i try to boot the installation without checking disk media, i get stuck on the same screen. Any ideas here? Again thank you so much i know that I am probably very ignorant with my questions!
you didn’t write it in dd mode, most likely you didn’t use rufus properly
start rufus, press alt+I, select dd_image as input type, press the drive icon on the right to select the opensuse iso, press start, that’s it http://i.imgur.com/XxfvMN1.jpg
Actually turns out i did use rufus properly thanks to you! I think it was a graphic driver situation. I added nomodest (although i have no clue what that means) and it worked perfectly. I installed successfully.
But now i am facing a new issue, the login screen keeps bouncing back to the login screen after i type my password. I did chose autologin so I am not sure why that is not happening. The screen goes black for few minutes, but i see and move the mouse. Are you familiar with what might be the issue?
I was going to start a new thread about this but i figured i ask you since you seem to really know linux.
I for one do not think that you or your questions are ignorant. BUT this is the first time I have that you wanted to create a dual-boot MS Windows-10 and Leap-42.1 installation. AND I still do not know which openSuSE iso image you are using – DVD or NET.
You may have encountered another instance of a phenomenon (bug) that I am currently trying to understand on Lenovo Yoga 3 pro laptops. When trying to boot from a NET image or the Rescue System from a DVD image, the boot fails after USB system detection and mounting during the image mounting phase. The system appears to halt displaying “*** Signal 11 ***” at the bottom of a black screen and with the <CapsLock> lamp flashing. This is after the wireless, pci and usb systems have succeeded.
When preparing your installation USB drive there is no need to format it first – either ImageUSB or Rufus will write over and obliterate whatever was on the drive. You should end up with a small vfat partition for EFI and a larger iso9660 partition for the installation files. If the downloaded iso image’s checksum corroborates (I have no idea how that is done in Microsoft land), and the device boots, then you have almost certainly not made a mistake. (For what its worth, I have mostly migrated from DVDs to MicroSD memory – it can be used just as a USB drive but is smaller – and I have a couple of USB3-SD card adaptors).
For a dual-boot you should leave the BIOS settings in the default (MS Windows) mode with secure mode on and UEFI the preferred boot method. I find it useful (but not necessary) to use an Ethernet connection to the Internet during installation (a USB Ethernet adaptor is OK). I had to use the DVD image and select the install option. On the Free Licence screen you can select your region and keyboard layout. Assuming the last MS Windows boot was shut down cleanly, openSuSE will be able to shrink the NTFS data partition to make room for Leap-42.1. I thought that the installation was overgenerous to MS and manually chose to reduce the NTFS partition to 30GB.
Thank you very much for your reply. I am using the dvd image but i don’t think i encountered that caps lock flashing bug.
My issue appeared to be with the nvidia driver. Many others have experienced it and addining nomodeset to the boot fixed it.
I was able to install successfully. My installation had secure boot in opensuse hub set to true. But i disabled secure boot from uefi setting prior to installation because i read somewhere on the forum that i had to do that.
I am able to login into windows and Linux now. But i am facing a new problem. The login screen takes me back to the login screen after few minutes. I had autologin checked so i wasn’t even supposed to have to enter my password.
Thanks so much for all the help am getting from this great community!
