I have installed Opensuse 11.3 32bit on my machine. Everything works except it will not reboot or shut down. I get as far as the lizard then it stops like It does not know how to. I run su user in terminal and give init 0 command and it will shut down. but init 6 just does the same as reboot above.
You might want to list the hardware. Maybe someone with the same or similar hardware as seen the problem.

Well shut down works now??? But reboot still just hangs at the splash screen. As I posted before, does not look like I had any useful information.

Have you checked if the timing and memory speed are correctly set in your BIOS ?
Running Dell XPS 420 Quad. 3 g ram, 2400 HD ATI video. I have looked at the BIOS. I changed from S3 to S1 Power management. Turned off MiniView. Well looking at the Documentation from Dell looks as there is. I will have to check it out. The link below is the specs from the manual for my machine.

The standard diagnosis procedure is to disable the splash display during boot/halt.
In /boot/grub/menu.lst use “splash=verbose” in the kernel line instead of “splash=silent”.

Thanks for posting hardware and Dell documentation.
Looks like the reboot works too if the last boot.omsg was from the prior reboot.
I’m not sure why you’re in runlevel 0 or 6, but when you want to reboot in runlevels 1235 you should always use
shutdown -r now
## or
sudo shutdown -r now
not the reboot command.
man reboot
man shutdown
I was trying different ways to see which one worked. I tried in tty1 giving init 6 command. I tried shutdown command but did the same. I have switched out of splash screen by hitting escape key. Gets to the point of your system is rebooting now. Then just hangs there waiting for the pc to reboot. Like the software does not control the hardware.

Ah! I’ve something similar on two 11.2 machines, but with halt: they stop at the final moment when
they should power off. I have to push the power button. It doesn’t happen every time, though.

Ok, I resolved mine by downloading 64bit dvd, and non oss cd. Reinstalled everything again. This time I got all working great now. Reboots and shuts down without hitch. I also made sure I grabbed all the 32 bit software off the dvd. The reason for using 32 bit software was video drivers for lousy ATI video cards. I have all working thanks for all that posted. Great help as all ways.

I think that was just chance :-p
