Problems updating system. Please help.

I just recently installed openSUSE but when I try to update the system I get:

Many small boxes saying this keep popping up on the bottom right side of my screen:

“Notification from kupdateapplet

An error occurred”

The Update Applet says:

“DBus error : Unable to get transaction id from packagekit.”

Should I

“Start YaST and install updates manually” ?

I also get this message:

Accessing Package Management Failed

System is locked by application with pid 4488 (/usr/sbin/packagekitd).
Close this application before trying again.”

How do I fix all of this??

Hello Viper2,

Could you tell us a bit more?
Which version openSUSE you have?
if you use KDE or GNOME?

It means that an other program is using packagekit.

Press Ctrl+Esc and type “packagekit”.
Kill this process and try it again.

Good luck!

There was a bug that caused the notify spam. As I recall the fix was download first then the update to to KDE 4.3.5 came in the next update. If you did not log off and back on to apply the first fix you got a lot of notifications but no real problems.

The last is causes by having more then one update/install program running at one time. If you want to see what process is locking the RPM data type

ps -A | grep PID

where PID is the process ID number returned by the error.

I am using openSUSE 11.2 64-bit.

Ok, so I restarted openSUSE and when I check for new updates it said no new updates are available. So does that mean all the updates were installed properly? How can I check to make sure?

Thanks.

You look to be up to date, at least that is the latest kernel.
