Problems & (perhaps) bugs encountered with KDE Plasma 5

Hi, my first post to this forum!
I’ve been using openSUSE, & previously SuSE, for about 14 years.
I installed openSUSE Tumbleweed on a spare drive on another machine,
& found some problems (or maybe bugs) for which I’ve not found many
answers.

First of all:
On startup I get an HPLIP warning message:-
“No system tray detected on this system”
“Unable to start, exiting.”

Starting HPLIP from the Application Launcher menu, I get the same message.
Ticking the “Place in the systray” option, I get another message:
KDEInit could not launch ksystraycmd:
Could not open library ‘/usr/lib64/libkdeinit5_ksystraycmd’
Cannot load library /usr/lib64/libkdeinit5_ksystraycmd: (/usr/lib64/libkdeinit5_ksystraycmd.so:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
HPLIP is the latest version: 3.15.4

Running “locate libkdeinit5”, I get:
linux-tumbleweed:~> locate libkdeinit5
/usr/lib64/libkdeinit5_kaccess.so
/usr/lib64/libkdeinit5_kcalc.so
/usr/lib64/libkdeinit5_kcminit.so
/usr/lib64/libkdeinit5_kcminit_startup.so
/usr/lib64/libkdeinit5_kcmshell5.so
/usr/lib64/libkdeinit5_kded5.so
/usr/lib64/libkdeinit5_klauncher.so
/usr/lib64/libkdeinit5_klipper.so
/usr/lib64/libkdeinit5_kmenuedit.so
/usr/lib64/libkdeinit5_kmix.so
/usr/lib64/libkdeinit5_kmixctrl.so
/usr/lib64/libkdeinit5_konsole.so
/usr/lib64/libkdeinit5_ksmserver.so
/usr/lib64/libkdeinit5_kuiserver5.so
/usr/lib64/libkdeinit5_kwin_rules_dialog.so
/usr/lib64/libkdeinit5_kwin_wayland.so
/usr/lib64/libkdeinit5_kwin_x11.so
/usr/lib64/libkdeinit5_kwrite.so

It appears that “libkdeinit5_ksystraycmd.so” is missing in kf5.
Whether this is deliberate, or an oversight, I don’t know.
But my guess would be that as it is missing, any other apps (such as Pidgin, Claws-Mail etc)
will be the reason why they also do not appear in the system tray?

Secondly: Although the Login sound is ticked in “KDE Workspace”, there is no sound.
Similarly on “Logout”. However all the other sounds are working ok.

Thirdly: The panel clock - it doesn’t seem like the font color can be changed in the right-click menu “Digital Clock Settings”, or that the
time can be changed to a 12 hour clock (instead of the default 24 hour clock) in System Settings > Locale.

Anyone have any thoughts or ideas?

System:-
openSUSE 64 bit
KDE Plasma Version: 5.3.0
Qt Version: 5.4.1
Kernel Version: 4.0.4-1-desktop
RAM: 8 GiB

It is missing, yes. That’s deliberate. HPLIP’s option seems to be intended for KDE4 only.
And it seems to be not compatible with Plasma5 at all. I have heard of that problem, but don’t know whether there is a solution yet. Maybe a later version would work?
You don’t need hplip for printing anyway though.

No.
Plasma5 does not support old-style system tray icons at all any more.
See http://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/2014/06/where-are-my-systray-icons/

For some applications, installing certain additional packages might help, see that blog post.

Secondly: Although the Login sound is ticked in “KDE Workspace”, there is no sound.

That’s not implemented yet.
Will probably be in 5.4 though.

Thirdly: The panel clock - it doesn’t seem like the font color can be changed in the right-click menu “Digital Clock Settings”

That’s work in progress too.

or that the time can be changed to a 12 hour clock (instead of the default 24 hour clock) in System Settings > Locale.

Plasma5/KF5 just uses Qt’s locale support now (which in turn just uses the system facilities), instead of having its own thing.
At the moment you can change to a 12 hr clock by setting a time locale that uses a 12 hr clock.

Further improvements in this area are work in progress and depend on Qt5.

I see. Thank you very much for your replies wolfi323.
