I’m trying to install openSUSE 11.1 on some Dell PowerEdge blades with dual Xeon processors, but I’m running into some trouble running them (getting them to start up/shut down etc.). What I’m wondering is if there is a way to get the SMP kernel to install off the disc instead of just installing the -default kernel. This should (hopefully) solve the problems, but I don’t know how. If anybody could offer any help at all, it would be greatly appreciated.
I don’t think there is a special SMP kernel anymore in 11.1, at least I can’t find a SMP kenel package with zypper. IIRC the default kernel can figure out whether it needs to be monoprocessor or SMP automatically.
DANG, i thought it said Media Check (not firmware test?)
hmmmm…come to think of it, i think the ‘default’ kernel is a SMP
kernel…
are you installing a 64 bit, or 32 on a 64 machine?? if the latter you
probably to install the pae kernel…but, i think if you have a PILE
of RAM it will see that automatically load you up…
hmmmm, what do you mean you have trouble “getting them to start
up/shut down etc”?? have you installed and THEN they won’t start
up/stop or are you still trying to install???
try this: at the first screen (AFTER you have confirmed you install
DVD (not CD) is absolutely 100% perfect) type (just start typing and
it will automatically fall into the Boot options line)
acpi=off
and see if that solves all your probs…
