Problems connecting with AR242x chip

Hi.

I have two netcards, RT2860 & AR242x chip. Since I couldn’t get my wireless working with RT2860 I am now trying with AR242x!

I have been reading a lot of guides of how to install drivers and setup the configuration with these chips. But I still don’t have connection, although I have a feeling that I am getting closer after I made a fresh start and followed Atheros madwifi - openSUSE.

Now it seems like I’m connected although I dont actually have one.

linux-8jet:/home/nicolai # iwconfig wlan0
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"MGJxRD96"
          Mode:Ad-Hoc Frequency:2.412 GHz Cell: 1A:EB:82:B8:80:76
          Tx-Power=27 dBm
          Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr=2352 B
          Encryption key:<my key>
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

But an iwlist scan gives me this

linux-8jet:/home/nicolai # iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0 No scan results

By the way, NetworkManager tells me that I am connected but says active: 0%
Any suggestions?

why this

Mode:Ad-Hoc

you won’t be able to do much with this, your connection should be at least Managed. Also, what encryption are you using ?

Andy

How do I change the mode without disabling NetworkManager? I am using WPA but want to be able use both WPA and WEP. Need any extra information?

Just edit the connection, if you are using 11.0, use YaST - network devices- network settings. If you are using 11.1, you edit the connection with network manager. You can only use one method of encryption with each connection, so,if you want the device to use WEP and WPA, set up two connections & use Nm to switch between them

Andy

Yeah I have it mode: managed now, but then what?

After a reboot I am not able to connect anymore for some reason? Btw., if I blacklist ath5k then I lose wlan0. Doesn’t that indicate that wlan0 isn’t using the madwifi?

Now I’ve spent four days on this and getting desperate. Any advice would be appreciated
