Hi
I have a problem booting with my Maxtor Onetouch USB hard drive attached:
whenever the drive has been attached during BIOS startup GRUB hangs,
complaining about video modes, most likely looking int the wrong places with
a messed up drive order. Only way to boot successfully is to disconnect and
reconnect immediately after grub started to boot, otherwise system hangs.
BIOS boot order is set correctly and drive order in grub.conf looks like it
is in accordance with it. Any thoughts?

I’ve seen this happening too. Tried all kinds of BIOS settings. Then found out it was doing this with one USB disk, but not with others. The one that made booting horrible was a Maxtor as well. WD’s and Seagates did not generate the problem

Yeah, there is something screwy with their usb converters. It seems
to be related to their one-touch cold iron restore tricks. Try
reinstalling GRUB, it might help. Otherwise, rewriting the boot block
and partition table on the disk may be the needed trick. Or a
combination. Or something else.
