Problem with wireless connection after updating from 11.1 to 12.1

I had multiple problems with my internet connection when upgrading from opensuse 11.1 to 12.1. (I have 64 bit version).

At first I couldn’t start up opensuse until I connected my LAN cable. The problem is described here:

I solved this issue by updating the NetworkManager.

Still some problems remain. I cannot use WLAN: The following things are irritating:

  1. The NetworkManager does not start up automatically (no symbol in the task bar). When I plug in the LAN cable the internet works fine (still no symbol from NetworkManager)

  2. I want now to use WLAN and start up the NetworkManager. I see a green globe at the task bar (it is always a green globe and does not change if i try to connect WLAN or plug in/out the LAN cable).

  3. I try to connect to WLAN by “new connections” (I try to translate this from my German version). Choose the EESID (All EESIDs are visible!) and the encryption method/password. Equal to what password I provide, I see now my EESID followed by (WPA/RSN), the encryption symbol (a lock) and the signal bar at the NetworkManager menu (seems like it is connected), but I am not connected to the internet (or to my router).

I tried the following things without success to connect to the internet wireless:

  1. Disabled the WPA encryption

  2. Disabled firewall (I gave it a try even if lan works).

  3. Changed EESID

  4. used network settings in Yast (disabled NetworkManager) and tried to use ifup. Providing information about EESID and password there, I was asked to install iw. I clicked “install”, but it didn’t install correctly “UI Syntax Error - Multiple buttons with role [Cancel] - Check the log file”

  5. tried to delete /var/run/dbus/at_console/root as described here

    but it didn’t exist anyway.

The logfile in var/log/NetworkManager is not updating any more since I did the upgrade to opensuse 12.1

What can I do?

I still need help. I am now one step further:

  • I installed iw and smpppd from the “Yast - software” dialog (not from within the “Yast- network settings” dialog. I was asked to install iw and smpppd there, but installation failed) successfully.
  • From the network settings in yast I selected ifup and put in the required wireless settings.

Now iwconfig is more promising:

Your wireless is connected. Do you have an IP assigned using ifconfig. If so,
you need to check the output of ‘/sbin/route -n’ to see if there is a global
route set. If so, you need to check /etc/resolv.conf to see if your
nameserver(s) are correct.

If you look at the line with the flags UG, what do you see as the Iface? I see
eth0! If you want to use wireless, you need to down the ethernet. If you
configure if to be active ONLY when plugged, then unplugging the wire will also
work.

In any case, after downing eth0, you may need the command


sudo /sbin/route add default gw 192.168.2.1

YES! It works. Thanks for the hint. I changed the respective settings in network settings within yast and made a restart.
