Problem with video playback

Hi Everyone,

I am running openSUSE 11.1 on a Pentium Dual Core 2.5 (E5200) Processor, 2GB RAM and an NVidia 8400GS PCI Express display card.

My system runs like a dream. When I intitially installed my system I also installed VLC media player, at that time it was version 1.0.1, Mplayer and SMplayer a few codecs for K3B, handbrake for DVD ripping etc. That was also the only time since my computer has been online, i have never updated it since. And it had no problems whatsoever. Among other things I use my system to watch DVD’s. I watched many DVD’s and video clips flawlessly.

Now all of a sudden when watching DVD’s and video clips the DVD playback flickkers red (the color red). I am not sure what causes it and it is very irritating. It flickkers even more with video clips. With a DVD it dissappears after a while but as soon as you move your mouse pointer or click on the screen it starts to flickker red again.

I thought it was my NVidia card that might be faulty, but I booted up from a Puppy linux live-cd and I played a DVD from there and it works 100%.

It seems to be a software problem that is causing my frustrations.

Any possible suggestions and solutions??

Many thanks

PS, I get the same problem with both media players, VLC and SMplayer.

Which video driver are you using? Vesa ? openGL ? proprietary ?

I installed the Nvidia driver, I suppose it is the propriety driver then? I used the 1click install from opensuse’s website.

I asked because there was an xorg-x11-driver-video update to version 7.4-87.90.1 mid-last week that could plausibly cause problems with users of the openGL driver. I would not expect it would impact the proprietary driver, but in truth I do not know.

If you were using installing your proprietary graphic driver via “the hardway” where it is custom built for one’s hardware, I would recommend re-install the graphic driver to see if that would help (probably not, but one never knows unless they try). I don’t use the one-click install so I can’t say if a re-installation there of the nvidia driver/packaged rpm would help.

I had this problem on openSuse 11.0 with binary nvidia driver version < 190.25 when compositing was enabled. My workaround back then was to temporary disable composition and re enable it when video playback end.

Now on my OpenSuse 11.2 with nvidia driver version 190.42, and kde3.4.3, the problem seems to be solved. Try to update your distro and install the latest binary nvidia driver
