Problem with Opensuse and my New Laptop :(

Hi,

I had been using OpenSuse since it’s ver 5.3 days (ok, it was called SuSe that time) and I have been quite happy with it.

3 weeks ago, I bought a new laptop, a MSI EX460 and tried to install Opensuse V11.1. OpenSuse would not recognize the graphic card (which is a ATI Radeon 4330) and would remains at 1024 x 768 view, which is quite irritating. Moreover, the wireless LAN based on Atheros chipset isn’t working as well.

I tried the ATI driver from the “Additional Yast Software repository” and it totally crash the system and disallow me to log in thereafter. I tried to reinstall OpenSuse again, this time downloading the Linux Drivers from ATI, again, it crashes the system.

In the end, I tried ubuntu linux. Well, the Graphic Card issue was solved (Ubuntu correctly recognize the graphic card and the correct resolution. Installation of Drivers from ATI did not crash it, but instead enhanced it’s speed). However, the Wireless Lan is not working as well.

I am a die hard fan of Suse linux, I do not wish to change distro if possible.

Can anyone here help?

Don’t know the answer to the ati-graphics but did get atheos wlan going with ath5k default driver. What I did was removed all entries in fstab and network scripts enabling ivp6. Chose ifup method under Yast-networks and configured the network settings there. With ivp6, my printers and the athoes both didn’t work but just timed-out.

with that experience i guess you already tried (while Ubuntu was
installed) to make a copy of its /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and grab a copy
of that great working ATI driver…

then, shove that driver into the openSUSE set and choose the mode,
monitor, device, screen, etc settings from the great working xorg.conf
and hand edit a working file for openSUSE??

i wonder why it didn’t work for you…

Be advised that /etc/X11/xorg.conf is decreasingly relevant these days; much X11 setup info is derived from EDID automatically. See your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file for details.

Take a look at user djdoo’s definitive setup advice over at Guides and FAQs - Compiz Community Forums.
It’s nominally for Compiz, but has good general comments.

For what it’s worth, I have the latest ATI drivers for my middling Radeon 2600 card. I have a stripped down xorg.conf file now–no modules, no modelines, a few fonts. I just run the .run file and accept all defaults. No sax2, just aticonfig, reboot. Works fine for me.

Hi,

I tried all methods. It just doesn’t want to work with Opensuse. To add salt to my wounds, now the Wireless of Ubuntu works and Opensuse’s still cannot detect my Wireless card.

What could be the problem?

What kernel does Ubuntu use? Do you think wireless works there because
they have a later version? If so, you should install the
compat-wireless package for your kernel.
