Problem with Kingwin USB Memory Card Reader

I have a Samsung T5 1 terabyte device (it calls itself a hard drive; it really is a really big flash drive). It connects to my box (details below) via a USB cable. I use it for backups.

As I currently have 4 devices which attach via USB, I bought a Kingwin USB dongle with 3 USB ports and a number of slots for various sized flash cards. I have plugged the Kingwin into one of the UISB ports on the front of my box, and my stylus into the other.

I have backed up a large number of pictures on that T5, but have never had to actually read them from it, until recently. When I tried to read them, every one was scrambled, including the thumbnail.

As a last resort, I tried plugging the Kingwin into one of the USB ports on my computer and trying to view the pictures. They were fine.

(Finally) my questions: Is this behavior expected? Is there something wrong with the Kingwin? Is my Samsung T5 on it’s last legs? Appreciate help from someone who knows better than me.

System:
O/S: OpenSUSE LEAP 15.5
Mainboard: MSI MAG B560 Tomahawk WIFI
CPU: Intel i-5-11400 @ 2.60Ghz

No,

Most likely, yes. If you still can. return it. Or you can try plugging other devices in this dongle and leaving your Samsung on a built-in port.

The issue may be related to the USB hub or its connection. Try connecting the Samsung T5 directly to your computer to see if the problem persists. If the files display correctly, it could be an issue with the USB hub. If issues persist, check the T5’s health using Samsung’s software and for sure, consider backing up your data.

To paraphrase Agnes Allen: When all else fails, read the manual(s).

The Samsung T5 has a rated speed of 5.6G. The Klingwin dongle is rated at 5.0G. Which explains why plugging the T5 directly into a port on my case works while going thru the Klingwin to get to the box doesn’t. Can’t return the Klingwin, and have reorganized my devices to have an empty port to plug the T5 into. Thanks to all for helpful comments.
