Problem with Graphic Interface in Root

Help Please.
I have done something stupid and lost the KDE graphic interface in root.
Everything works perfectly for the default user but when I start a new session as root all I get is the standard green Suse backdrop with a white terminal window in the top left hand corner of the screen.
Can anyone please tell me what I need to type in this terminal window to get back to the graphics window?

Don’t run a desktop as root. Log out and log in as normal user. Then use dolphin as root, or ‘su -’, or ‘sudo’

Running sessions as root is a seriously bad idea, you’d best not do that.

Instead, use the following:

  • In a konsole window, enter su, hit Enter and input your root password to get a root permissions.
  • For gui apps, right-click on the desktop and select “Run command”. Enter kdesu followed by the application name, e.g. kdesu dolphin, to run run the application with root permissions.

you should never log into the Gnome GUI as root…why, because it
screws stuff up…royal…

and, it is never required to perform and/all admin functions!

i have no idea how to fix what you have done to it by logging into the
GUI as root…

yes, i know…over in that OS made by Redmond everyone does it…and
some do here, and eventually they screw up their system too…just
like most do in Redmond land…

really, i have no idea how to even begin to repair the damage…good
luck…well, you might TRY booting from the install DVD and select
“Repair Installed System”…but NEVER log into the GUI as root even
just to see if it got fixed…

su -

and not plain *su. *I am not going to explain it again. Search in the Forums for elaborate discussions or simply read

man su

an meditate over it to grab the implications.

Many thanks for your replies and I hear what you are saying.
Because I am totally incapable of remembering commands etc which must be used in terminal I need a gui that I can use when necessary.
Thanks to Tokugawa-Ieyasu I now have an alternative to using root which I shall use from now on.
(Just as a matter of interest I have been making use of the root gui, when necessary, from SUSE 9.0 up to SUSE 11.2 before coming to grief!)
I would however like to return the root gui to normal if it was possible without having to, as a last resort, do a new install.
