I bought a Samsung F2.5 Bright Lens camera. Downloading the pictures gives me a ‘digikam4.db’ file and ‘thumbnails-digikam.db’ for which I cannot find a conversion application. Samsung are not much help - any suggestions? Thanks. https://forums.opensuse.org/images/icons/icon8.png

That’s probably the database generated by KDE’s Digikam, so Linux knows
about it, provided you use Digikam to download the photos. If you use
instead the file browser, you are bothered by it 
( Tell those Samsung experts they are dumb! 
)

Launch digiKam. If the pictures were successfully downloaded, you should probably see them there, in digiKam’s default path. Those db files are digiKam database files and thumbnails database files, with pointers to the actual images, so you don’t convert those files.
A lot of advanced manipulation of the photos can be done in digiKam, including sorting and cataloguing, converting (from RAW to DNG, to png and jpeg, for example), prepress or image enhancement.
Personally, when I want to download the pictures, I launch digiKam and do the downloading from within it, where I can control the method of downloading and the place to download to.

And it probably also writes a database on the camera flash media. Makes
things easier and faster, I guess.

Not normally. In fact, I have never seen that. I see that only in the root of the computer directory for the digiKam photo album.
If it is turning up on the flash media, something is going wrong. (Unless the camera, itself, uses digiKam to save and display the photos to the card, somehow?)
