I have an old 303 (which is Connexant 2388x based) card. Are you trying to use kdetv? I had a lot of problems with it from 10.x version and after trying TVtime which works great I did not even bother try to see if kdetv / xawtv still works.

I think TVtime is available in the standard repository.
