Problem with 3D Graphics driver

I recently installed opensuse. I have a 64bit Acer Laptop Model 5535-5452 with Athlon X2 2.1 Ghz, 3gb ram and ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics card.

The problem that I am having is with graphics. I tried to install the graphics driver from ATI repository at opensuse and then initiated SaX2 according to the easy guide. but that completely screwed up my display and I got a blank screen everytime I booted. The only thing that worked was when I downloaded the latest drivers .run file from ATI’s own website. IN that case I am able to change my resolution and color depth. I can also view some videos as well but my 3d acceleration is greyed out in the SaX2 window. Whenever I want to enable the desktop effects it says that I have to check my X Configuration. Is there any way to enable the 3D feature and hardware acceleration. please help

Please open a terminal and post result of:

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I got the following response

/…/

log out. When new login appear switch to the terminal by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1, login as root user (you know your root password - right), and type:

init 3

then

then

I oped the Sax file. It is too long to paste here. Is there any part in the Sax file you want me to post here.

Are you getting a display? Able to login?

Everything is file. I am able to change resolution. Change the color depth but my 3D acceleration is disabled so I canot use dektop effects. Is there any way I can post a screep capture of my Sax 2 window?

Press print screen
save as whatever.png
upload to a site like imagebam

post the BB code

Change Monitor
If you use a LCD select -->LCD and the resolution
test, apply

see if that helps

Sorry. It didnt work. The 3D and OpenGL is still disabled and I heard that ATI also has its own catalst settings program in linux. I dont have access to it either. Do you think that I need to change a setting in a file or something? Here is the desktop setting window output when I try to enable desktop effects.

I’m not good with ATI, never had one, never will.

See the end section of xorg.conf
For compositing it should read:

Section "Extensions"
  Option "Composite" "on"
EndSection

You could consider a manual driver install:

You will need to download the driver from ATI. But you will need to delete current drivers and disable the repo for it, just to be safe.

Put the driver in your /home/username

From level 3 cli as su

Enter the command sh ./ati-driver-installer-packageversion*.x86_64.run to launch the ATI
Proprietary Linux driver installer.
The ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Setup dialog box is displayed.

Accept licence

Select Automatic and click Continue. The ATI Proprietary Linux Driver is now
installed, and the Installation Complete Dialog box will be displayed.

Click Exit to close the ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Installer.
Launch the Terminal Application/Window and run:
For versions of X.Org newer than 7, /usr/bin/aticonfig --initial to configure the
driver for your ATI product.

  • edit as appropriate {TAB} will auto complete

THere are many lists of commands here. Do I need to use a specific command with aticonfig to enable 3d acceleration

If you are refering to the previous post I made. The first part addresses editing the xorg.conf
Do that like this:
gnomesu gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
or
kdesu kwrite /etc/X11/xorg.conf

The second section in quotes is a completely different way of installing the driver. I use a similar method for my Box which uses nvidia
