Is it please secure to downgrade vlc packages ?
I just went through this upgrade without problems. I just indicated to change vlc from packman to openSUSE (option 1 in the first few questions). No need to downgrade anything.

Hi! I had the same problem yesterday when upgrading. I chose option 1 and it stopped playing mkv, mp4,…
zypper dup...
Problem: the installed vlc-noX-3.0.17.4-9.9.x86_64 requires 'libmatroska.so.7(V_1.6.1)(64bit)', but this requirement cannot be provided
deleted providers: libmatroska7-1.6.3-1.9.x86_64
Solution 1: install vlc-noX-3.0.17.4-6.4.x86_64 from vendor openSUSE
replacing vlc-noX-3.0.17.4-9.9.x86_64 from vendor http://packman.links2linux.de
Solution 2: keep obsolete libmatroska7-1.6.3-1.9.x86_64 Solution 3: break vlc-noX-3.0.17.4-9.9.x86_64 by ignoring some of its dependencies

The libmatroska7 package, if upgraded to version 1.7.1, fails to include “provides” for libmatroska.so.7(V_1.6.1)(64bit)’. It should be rebuilt to provide that, the whole purpose of 1.7.1 being to restore compatibility with the older 1.6.1 version.
1.7.0 introduced the incompatibility, and should not be used. I opened a bug on this, but I am only a user reading the changelog - I can’t build the package. https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1204327
with respect, this was not a codec problem, and packman doesn’t contain a libmatroska7 RPM. (Matroska is a container.) I upgraded my own VLC and related packages (I use VLC on a QT desktop) using the option to ignore the problem and install “broken”, my various media files (mostly mp4) play with no issues.
I haven’t tried an actual “MKV” file, and think that would FAIL before installing a corrected libmatroska7, and possibly re-installing the VLC packages at that time.

rickst29 you should read to whom i answered this. My comment was for Vernius who claimed that vlc stopped playing mp4. This is not true if you have done the vendorswitch to packman and installed vlc-codecs from it even if the main vlc package is from openSUSE repo.
I didn’t brake my installation like you but installed vlc from openSUSE repos which showed no side effects…

I choosed to retain the obsolete package from packman.
Is this an issue that will be rectified by a Packman update?
hut and conram had smarter solutions than I, and I’m sorry to have butted into an “already solved” problem with different issue. Several new package builds are now present on OBS. These were as version number ‘3.0.17.4-332’, I expect that they will be promoted into regular ‘update’ repositories tomorrow.
After I added OBS as an enabled media, they all installed from the YAST2 software GUI without issues. I created a “test” mkv using ffmpeg, both it and the original mp4 play without any issues. Thanks to all for patience with my misdirection and poor reading skills. ;).

Thanks for the comprehensive feedback. Users may want to minimize issues caused by restrictive defaults. Actually the “already solved problem” never existed. With the settings used on host erlangen 99% of upgrades run unattended:
**erlangen:~ #** grep ^solver /etc/zypp/zypp.conf
**solver**.onlyRequires = true
**solver**.dupAllowDowngrade = true
**solver**.dupAllowVendorChange = true
**erlangen:~ #**
I opt for not installing recommended packages during dist-upgrades. I can install recommends on a case by case basis.
libzypp’s SAT solver implements a great concept in a very efficient way. Users may execute a dry run with all restrictions removed:
**erlangen:~ #** alias dupt
alias dupt='zypper --non-interactive dist-upgrade --dry-run --allow-arch-change --allow-downgrade --allow-name-change --allow-vendor-change'
**erlangen:~ #**
**erlangen:~ #** time dupt

The coordinated and required new version ‘libmatroska7-1.7.1-95.1.x86_64’ is also present on OBS.
I thank karlmistelberger for describing and recommending those zypper conf changes, along with his preferred zypper command string. I personally have about a zillion ‘texlive’ packages installed via default ‘recommends’, and I think that I’m not actually using them them at all. I’m going to copy those changes into my own system, thanks!
I was able to pull updates yesterday and the issue went away without me needing to change anything.
Yes, it’s all solved with updates to the “requires” and “provides” specifications of the packages involved. (vlc nox no longer requires the older specific version). Updated versions (with lower version numbers than the previous OBS builds) have been uploaded to both OSS and PacMan. Do you care to re-title the Thread as “Solved” ?

That’s not possible here in this forum.
Yes, that can be done by the OP. But, we do not really want that done in the openSUSE Forums, as it may be solved for one user and not for another.
