Problem Surfing using a network Internet connection

Hey all,

I’m using Open Suse 11.2 on my HP DV6 1152tx. My Open Suse box is networked to a PC with Windows 7 installed. On the Windows machine I have a wireless internet connection that is shared. The IP of the windows machine is 192.168.1.2 and that of my laptop is 192.168.1.3.

I am using Network Manager in KDE4 to setup my connection. The connection gets successfully set up and I can ping my machine and other public IPs as well. However, I cannot browse the internet via Firefox or any other web browser.

In my previous installation of Open Suse 11.2, I was able to browse.

Am I missing something here? Oh and NO! I have no DNS setup on either machine. I am using a wireless MTS connection. And MTS hasn’t provided me with any DNS IPs that I can use. Without the IP’s I was previously able to connect… The Windows 7 machine can connect to the internet and infact, I am writing this post from the windows box.

Looks like a DNS or gateway problem. If DNS is no problem, then maybe the
second:

Have you set the gateway to 192.168.1.2 on your linux machine?

If setting the gateway does not solve the problem (it does need to be set as
above), then also enter the Google Public DNS servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

After restarting the system and the network gateway PC a couple of times, it worked… I don’t understand how. Can anyone explain?
