I am new to both OpenSUSE and the forum. So bear with
I installed openSUSE on one of my work system. The network port wasn’t working when I was installing, but works fine now (checked in Windows). But for some reason, I am not able to configure the network. I used both Dynamic and Static IPs (both work fine in Windows) but still no go. I am using Yast Control Center for this purpose.
I can’t even ping the default gateway when I am using custom settings.
When I use dynamic settings, it says Unreachable Network.
Can someone please help me with the network configuration?
This happens often when you typo the IP address or the netmask. What are
they supposed to be? Using DHCP (dynamic) post the output from the
following commands:
ip addr
ip route
Also post the IP/netmask/gateway information from windows.
Good luck.

I guess it was typo or something. After repeated attempts it seems to be working fine now. However now I have another problem.
I have to use a proxy with user/password to connect to internet. I have set this up in Firefox and it works fine. But when I try to set the same proxy with the same credentials using Yast->NetworkServices->Proxy, I get the dreaded Authentication error.
Now I have done a fair bit of googling. “/etc/sysconfig/proxy” does not seem to have the credentials I gave using the proxy applet in yast. I even tried “http://user: pass@proxy: port” but that didn’t help either.
I’ve seldom used Proxy settings, and when I did I was just testing and set
them explicitly in Firefox (vs. system-wide via Yast) so I probably can’t
help there. Which utility are you using to access the Internet when you
get the error… is it Firefox again set to use the system proxy settings?
What about other things like Konqueror or Nautilus? What kind of proxy
is it?
I am not exactly sure what sort of proxy it is. But I do need to provide username/password for it even while using it on Firefox.
Since the proxy is setup on Firefox, no other application is able to access internet except Firefox itself. I can’t even do a simple ping to google.com or any other public sites from the terminal.

Have you tried configuring your network with:
YaST-> Network Services->Proxy

I apologize for not noticing you mentioned this in your second post.
If your username has a space you might try enclosing it in quotes,
e.g. “john doe”. It’s possible that YaST stops parsing with the first white
space. No guarantee.
