It’s kinda hard to help you if you’ve uninstalled the software - we can’t
suggest things for you to try until you reinstall it.

We also need to know specifically which download you used, what version
of openSUSE you’re using, and what video card and driver you’re using.

Never tried mame before, but was able to start games in mame
i installed mame and mame-tools through YaST(Packman repo from community repos)
I downloaded the roms and placed them here ~/Downloads/roms
Then i could run mame in terminal like this

 mame -rp ~/Downloads/roms

i could start the games
one of the games even asked me to “insert coins” ,but i couldn’t find a slot on my machine

insert coin usual one of the number keys 5 ( no idea if the num pad works )

ok, i will post the ss soon
i downloaded MAME from software.opensuse.org with name “mame” on factory distribution, because oS 12.2 not listed in there.
i use oS 12.2 KDE, and ATI 4300 series graphic card with propetary drivers (fglrx)
hope this help to find solution

i have not tries MAME from packman repo, because it has the older version (0.145), but i will try this now because that work on your machine
try push the “5” buttons to add coins. “1” to use the coins to play the games.

One more remark. Once you have a game running I think you can use “TAB” or “`” key (don’t remember which one it was but I’m sure one of those two) to open options and redefine keyboard settings for each player.

Other suggestion is to use AdvanceMAME as this has worked better for me but that may be my personal experience. It’s in the openSUSE emulators repo :
Index of /repositories/Emulators/openSUSE_12.2

hi all, i tried mame from packman repo, and it work very well on my machine! thanks to** vazhavandan** for sugested the version from packman repo

“TAB” Key actually
AdvanceMAME is not updated anymore, it will run some game that worked erlier, but not for the new game (ROM set), all MAME (xMAME, KXMAME, etc) that have version before 0.147 is obsolete, because of that i search for the new version (0.147), that have more game (and match ROM set) you can find the ROM from Rom Hustler - PSX ROMs GBA ROMs NDS ROMs SNES ROMs

my sugestion is install the MAME front-end, that is the GUI Interface for MAME, i sugest “MAME Executor” & “qmc2 launcher” for that

I would generally search for required software in YaST by adding OSS,NonOSS,Update,NonsOSS update repos and if i don’t get the software i move on software.opensuse.org .
Next though not recommended i then search for rpms here :- Linux Free Software Catalog and Packages Search - pkgs.org and RPM Search. Both sites show the “requires” packages too. rpm.bone is even better it uses (jnlp or applet) to check for existing “packages” on your system if you click on “Check requires” button

Thanks for the information. Didn’t know that. The ability to run games that worked earlier is why I use AdvancecMAME  I’m not interested in the new ones but I’ve got some old ROMs which I like to play from time to time.

Guys, just a reminder that this isn’t the place to post links to sites
that offer downloads of content (and the site I deleted from the above
quote falls in that category) that is under copyright.

MAME itself is an emulator and fine to discuss, but where to source
copyrighted ROMs from is not. See our Terms and Conditions if you have
questions.

I’ve deleted the posts that mention the site in question.
