Hey guys .,
I am right now using OpenSuse 11.2 with Gnome .
I have installed it on my dell laptop having win7 with the help of vmplayer …
I have got DVD of openSuse 11.3 from some where which actually installs suse directly with KDE desktop environment …
Accroding to my computer’s perfomance and my will
I want to install it with Gnome .
Is it actually possible to do that using the same DVD ???//
If yes than please reply how ???
ThanX in Advance …
Either deselect “KDE desktop” (which is the default) during installation and select Gnome instead. That will install openSUSE with Gnome desktop. Or install Gnome afterwards with the following command in a terminal :
zypper in -t pattern gnome
or from Yast2 somehow …
If you install openSUSE with Gnome first (as I do), you can install KDE afterwards with :
zypper in -t pattern kde4
Both patterns, gnome and kde4, include the basic gnome/kde4 desktop environment. You might have to install some other packages as well if needed in both cases.
That depends, is this really the dvd install disk or is it the kde live cd
(which can also be burnt on a dvd medium so it is difficult to judge from
the media).
Open the media and look how much content it has. If there is about 4 GB of
data on it, it is the full install dvd and you can choose gnome as desktop
environment during the installation procedure.
If there is only about 700 MB data on it it is one of the live cd’s (in that
case obviously kde live) and you are better of to download the full dvd from

Did you choose “new install” or did you update the existing installation of
11.2. If you did an update it will not ask many questions but asume that the
same settings you used during the last installation.
I recommend you download a fresh copy of the dvd from the official place I
posted, since

does not sound very trustworthy.

Well I am trying to do fresh installation …
As far as DVD is concerned I has came with the Linux For You magazine’s august issue…
So you can not doubt about its truthworthyness.
And I have also successfully installed KDE version of 11.3 suse from that DVD but it was not good for my laptop so I again swithed to gnome suse11.2…
Now please tell me what I should do , I just want a gnome environment in stead of KDE in suse 11.3
Please don;t give me any solution if I has to download more than 50 MB from internet because in my college it is practically impossible…
If it is really a DVD then there us a point where it asks which desktops you wan to install. It defaults to KDE but you can chose Gnome ot bot ot other or none.
If It is a CD image on a DVD then it will be either Gnome ot KDE depending on which image.
I have no way of knowing what Linux For You mag has put on the disk. Never heard of the publication.
