Hi I recently installed openSUSE 11.0 (dvd) to my laptop. When X is loading the screen goes completely white then slowly turns to grey. If I boot in failsafe mode, login as root and try to boot X the same happens. My laptop is a sony vaio fw series with 1080p display (1600x900) Mobile Intel(R) 4 Chipset. I tried installing diferent linux distros (fedora 9, ubuntu) but the same happened. I updated xorg, x11 from yast online_update in command but still the same. Also I don’t know how to find the xorg.conf or Xorg.0.log file in openSUSE. Appreciate any help. >:(
You may start by checking HCL/Laptops - openSUSE for your laptop specific brand and HCL/All Video Cards - openSUSE for your video card
OpenSUSE’s wiki has a bunch of how-tos, faqs, articles, etc.
Maybe forcing a standard video mode like 1024 x 768 with the oss driver for your card is a good starting point.
If nothing helps post more details on your hardware configuration (/etc/xorg.conf) and boot log messages so someone can help you.
Try a live cd and use the vesa option and see how it does, you could then change your current install thus way:
when booting, clear the boot line then, type 3 in the boot line to get runlevel 3 - login as root
type
sax2 -r -m 0=vesa
reboot
xorg is here:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
Still nothing I’m guessing it is because HD display 1080p, correct me if I’m wrong. Anyone who wants to add…

Didn’t work → displays a bunch of mouse pointers (like when you apply a tiled walpaper) and a blue background. – The display is working it just not displaying correctly. Any help please :’(
Is anyone having problems with X displaying correctly with HD 1080p displays or laptop monitors?
